OSP Coffee Chat Series
The Office of Sponsored Programs Training Team would like to invite you to join us for a casual yet informative, virtual coffee chat. Bring your coffee and your questions to join us in this short information session. This invitation is for you if you are a faculty, staff, or otherwise active participant in sponsored research at UMBC and would like to learn more from your OSP Team on various topics including: What is OSP? What is F&A? What is Cost Share? And More!
In an effort to create an even more open path to communication and education, and real-time answers, OSP’s virtual coffee chat series will continue July 9th, 11:30 am -12:00 pm.
Present Topic: What is F&A?

Description: The present topic will go over what F&A is, the purpose of F&A, and what to do if a sponsor request F&A less than our negotiated rate.
At the end of this session there will be time for some Q&A. Please feel free to comment with questions ahead of time to be answered during the current or future sessions. If you have questions that pertain to a specific grant, please reach out to your Grants Manager individually.

UMBC's Office of Sponsored Programs has started enforcing their proposal deadlines, which may result in *late* Proposals being declined.
To avoid that scenario, please continue to follow the internal CNMS Pre-Award Deadlines below:
10 business days before the sponsor’s due date – The
proposed budget must include all detailed accurate costs in accordance
with the sponsor’s funding guidelines. Additionally, all subcontract budget
negotiations must be complete for pre-award specialists to obtain all necessary documents. Budget changes by the PI
are no longer permitted after this deadline.
7 business days before the sponsor’s due date – All final proposal
documents as listed on the proposal checklist are due to the
pre-award specialist.
5 business days before the sponsor’s due date – Internal
routing via Kuali is initiated for final review and approval by the
stakeholders.
3 business days before the sponsor’s due date (OSP ready to submit deadline) – OSP will complete a
final review of the proposal to ensure compliance and submit. PIs may need to make change based on OSP feedback.

Applications Now Open for 2025-2026 CNMS Scholars Program

The
CNMS Scholars Program at UMBC is a selective undergraduate initiative designed to support talented individuals interested in the advancement of women students in the sciences. This prestigious program is being sponsored by the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) at UMBC to provide comprehensive support to students pursuing majors where women are still underrepresented, specifically: mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and bioinformatics/computational biology. The program will connect high-potential students to a community of designated faculty mentors and a myriad of campus support services in an effort to facilitate their academic success in these rigorous majors. CNMS Scholarships are for one year and could be renewable annually for up to two additional years, in accordance with funding availability and meeting program requirements as defined in an award agreement.
The application process includes uploading an application letter to the selection committee with an essay that covers three topics, as well as the submission of academic transcripts and a resume.
All applicants to the CNMS Scholars Program must have and maintain:
- Status as a full-time student at UMBC
- A minimum UMBC cumulative 3.0 grade point average
- Declared major in one of the following STEM disciplines: mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and bioinformatics/computational biology
- Demonstrated interest and commitment to the advancement of women in the identified STEM disciplines
- Compliance with all requirements and expectations of the CNMS Scholars Program
- Good-standing status throughout the University
The selection for the new cohort of scholars is open until May 05, 2025.

New Pre-Award Specialist
Dear colleagues,
Please join me in welcoming Ghina Arif as the new Pre-Award Specialist within CNMS Business Center Shared Services.
Ghina holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics from the University of California, Riverside and an Associate of Science in Business Administration from Riverside City College.
Ghina joins UMBC from the private sector where she worked on grant proposals, budget creation, and financial reports. As Pre-Award Specialist in the CNMS Shared Service Center, Ghina will provide support to the Physics Department and Chemistry & Biochemistry Department.
We are delighted to have Ghina join our office.

This workshop focuses on funding opportunities in the natural and mathematical sciences through the
Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. We will cover a variety of Fulbright opportunities that are specifically CNMS-friendly and discuss how to access UMBC internal support for application development and routing approval.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, the largest educational exchange program funded by the U.S. Department of State, provides opportunities for research, teaching, or both in all academic fields for faculty of all academic levels - from post-doctoral fellows to senior faculty.
Moderated by Dr. Brian Souders, Associate Director of Global Learning and Fulbright Scholar Liaison, Center for Global Engagement.

Dr. Anwesha Dey is an Executive Director and Distinguished Scientist in the Discovery Oncology Department at Genentech.

She is also a Project Team Leader for a late stage research drug discovery program at Genentech where she leads a large interdisciplinary team focused on small molecule drug discovery. Prior to this position, she held postdoctoral research fellowships in the laboratory of Vishva Dixit at Genentech and at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), A*STAR, Singapore in the laboratory of Sir David Lane. She did her PhD in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Summers at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at UMBC, Maryland and received her undergraduate degree in Biotechnology from National University of Singapore.
In addition to scientific research and discovery, she is passionate about mentoring the next generation of scientists at Genentech and beyond. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her family and enjoying fun activities with her daughter.

Please Welcome Rebecca Struckmeier to CNMS
New Assistant Dean for Financial Management
Dear colleagues,
Please join me in welcoming Rebecca Struckmeier as the new Assistant Dean for Financial Management, effective July 15, 2024. Struckmeier fills the role recently vacated by Jacinta Kelly, who served the college from 2014 to 2024 with skill, integrity, and compassion. We wish Jacinta all the best in her next role.
Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management from the University of Southern New Hampshire and a Master of Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University. Struckmeier joins UMBC from Johns Hopkins, where she worked as a Senior Accounting Manager for the Johns Hopkins University Controller's Office. Rebecca previously served as UMBC’s PeopleSoft Systems Manager and Assistant Controller from 2009 through 2022.
Many in the UMBC community know Rebecca’s significant contributions to our campus during her tenure, including business process improvements across PeopleSoft Finance, implementing PAW Procurement, and streamlining payroll distribution.
As Assistant Dean in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, Struckmeier will support the dean in the financial management of the college, its departments, and affiliated units. She will direct and oversee CNMS Business Central, which handles payroll, purchasing, grants (pre- and post-award), and budgets for the college and its departments. We are delighted to have Rebecca “back” on campus. Her knowledge and experience will be invaluable to the continued success and financial well-being of the college.
