Start Scheduling Your Final Exams
As
we approach the end of the semester, we at the Office of Student Disability
Services would like to remind students who are approved for testing
accommodations to start scheduling your finals exams with our office. Finals
start Thursday, December 13, 2018 and end Wednesday, December 19, 2018. Please schedule
your exams through our Accommodate online system. For any scheduling questions or concerns,
please contact us at 410-455-2459 or disAbility@umbc.edu.
Students,
who have been approved and are utilizing note-taking assistance, please make
sure you are downloading your notes. Class notes will not be available after
the last day of class. For any questions or concerns regarding note-taking
assistance, please contact us at sdsnotetaking@umbc.edu.

Fall 2018 Semester Accommodation Requests
Reminder: The Fall 2018 Semester starts Aug 29, 2018
The
Office of Student Disability Services (SDS) would like to remind students
to please submit their Semester Request as soon as
possible. This is done every semester you are enrolled in order to
authorize accommodation letters to be sent to your faculty members. It is done
online using our secure Accommodate system.
Important:
If you made changes to your course schedule after your Semester Accommodation
Request was submitted, you need to submit a new semester request for the new
course(s) in your schedule.
Alternate Format Text
and Digital Materials: For students
approved for alternate format text accommodations, please make sure you fill
out the Alternative Format Text form.
Note-taking
Assistance: Students that are approved for
note-taking assistance and plan to use this accommodation in their fall courses
are encouraged to try Sonocent audio note-taker instead of
using a peer note-takers.
Research indicates higher course GPAs and an increase in
active learning and content retention when using Sonocent! Contact Andrew Drummond, the SDS Assistive Technology
Specialist, at adrumm@umbc.edu to get started with Sonocent.

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) in collaboration with the Office of Student Disability Services (SDS) and the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) will hold a one hour information and training session called Accessibility 101 on Thursday, August 2nd in Engineering 102 from 12 - 1 p.m. The goal of this presentation is to provide an overview of what it means to create accessible materials, why it is important, and basic strategies for ensuring that your content is designed for universal access. The Orioles will celebrate the 28th anniversary of the American's with Disabilities Act with an on-field pre-game ceremony, first pitch by director of local service organization TransCen, a Retro Swinging-Bird T-shirt giveaway by the Challenger League, and more...
"The Orioles are honored to host Celebrate ADA Day on the 28th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This milestone event in American history has helped to expand opportunities for people with disabilities throughout the nation," said GREG BADER, Orioles Vice President of Communications and Marketing. "The Orioles are proud to recognize this historic event assuring civil rights for everyone with disabilities. We strive to create a ballpark experience that welcomes all fans, and our club will continue to expand upon the ways in which all individuals can enjoy the magic of Orioles Baseball at historic Camden Yards."
The Orioles offer a variety of gameday services and amenities for fans with physical and intellectual disabilities. At each game, assistive listening devices are available at the Fan Assistance Centers behind home plate on the Lower Level Concourse and on the first floor of the Warehouse. Additionally, ballpark announcements are captioned on Oriole Park scoreboards; nearly 400 equal access seats are available throughout the ballpark, as well as ample on-site, accessible parking; and service animals are permitted into Oriole Park.

with the basic skills to assess if their course materials are accessible
and to learn how to easily make them accessible in order to support
access and inclusion of students with disabilities and universal design
for all learners.
Trainees
should bring their laptop with Adobe Acrobat Pro or DC installed and at
least one PDF document from their course materials to review. Direct
instruction will be provided for both creation of an accessible document
and remediation of inaccessible content using common authoring tools
including Microsoft and Adobe products. For questions or to RSVP,
contact Andrew Drummond, SDS Assistive Technology Specialist at adrumm@umbc.edu or reserve through the myUMBC event site. Space is limited.
