College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) Graduate Research Festival (GradFest) is an informal(ish) conference style event to see all the cool research going on in the CNMS!

 

This event will be held on Friday, April 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. (University Center, Ballroom area, 3rd floor). It will be an exciting event for all graduate students and postdocs to come together to celebrate interdisciplinary research and make new connections. 

 

To participate in this event, all you need to do is fill out one of the registration forms below:

  1. Presenter Registration Form: Complete this form if you plan to attend the event and present a research poster. You also have the opportunity to apply to give a 5-minute Lightning Round talk about your research project.
  2. Non-Presenter Registration Form: Register using this form to attend this event without presenting your research project.

Thank you to those of you who came out to our first meeting! As promised, I have made a Google Form to gather your input and have it all in writing. The form asks:

1. What companies you'd like to hear from with SPIE. Shoot for the stars!

2. Science Olympiad call for volunteers. We have been asked to help run the optics challenge for high schools student's science olympiad. In short, they need to position mirrors to make a laser pointer hit a target and take an optics based quiz. There is more information about the mirror experiment and the quiz in the form. The form asks if you'll be volunteering for the experiment, quiz writing, both, or neither.

3. The greater SPIE categorizes events as Community Outreach, Professional Development Skills, Academic/Technical Education, and Activities to build industry connections. I ask you to rank each of these in regards to how you'd like our SPIE Chapter to prioritize these categories.

4. Anything else you'd like to share or suggest.

I'm so excited to announce that as of Aug 28, 2023 we are recognized as both an official campus organization AND as an official student chapter by SPIE! 

My name is Leslie and I am the current president of the UMBC SPIE Student Chapter (that's me in the picture). I am a 5th year physical chemistry PhD student studying laser spectroscopy. I met a lot of you at the grad student org fest this afternoon and it was so great to meet you all! I'm really excited to have a group where all the people interested in optics can come together.

Our first meeting will be held November 14th in the chemistry building (Meyerhoff) room 120 at 5 pm. More information on that is to come. I wanted to post now to get a funding opportunity on your radar. SPIE offers travel grants (including airfare, hotel, and registration fees) to students! The application can be found here. The deadline for the Advanced Lithography + Patterning conference is Nov 23, 2023 and the deadline for the Photonics West 2024 and AR/VR/MR 2024 conferences are due Nov 17, 2023. 

To be eligible to receive funding you must be an active Student Member of SPIE. I highly encourage you all to become members! It is only $20 for the year, there are a number of perks from SPIE, and you can put it on your resume! If you enroll in a membership, be sure to select that you are affiliated with the UMBC Student Chapter of SPIE.
