UMBC SPIE Student Chapter is bringing you a very special event in collaboration with the optics and photonics company, ThorLabss!

ThorLabs will be bringing a solar powered trailer fully outfitted as an optics lab to educate on the wide uses of optics and photonics all across stem fields. This is a hands on, accessible experience for anyone interested! And they're bringing it right here to Erickson Field, Nov 21 and Nov 22.

Day 1 (Nov 21) is a drop by event where students can explore three experiments in about 1 hour. The experiments will demonstrate music being communicated through lasers and optical fibers, optical coherence tomography imaging of skin and nails, and infrared spectroscopy of invisible chemicals in the air. This day is awesome for undergraduates of all levels.

Day 2 (Nov 22) is an advanced quantum optics experience for upper level undergrads, graduate students, and interested faculty. Participants will align single photon detectors and measure the coincidences to observe the differences between classical and quantum light sources. This experiment will take around two hours. Because this is a hands on tutorial, space is limited to 18 participants (6 students per time slot). Registration is required, please scan the QR code in the attached flyer!
