MM&P has two publications: The Master, Mate & Pilot magazine, published six times a year, and The Wheelhouse Weekly, an electronic newsletter distributed every Tuesday, 52 times a year. In addition, MM&P posts news for union members and others who are interested in the American Merchant Ma-rine on its website, www.bridgedeck.org.
The Communications Intern assists the Communications Director with specific tasks associated with producing the editorial and photographic content featured in the two publications and posted on the website.
The Intern will gain experience in the areas of: writing; proofreading; selecting, taking and scanning photographs for publication; and interacting with union members and the general public.
The Intern reports to the Communications Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The following are some of the general duties and responsibilities of the Communications Intern.
• Searches the Internet and known websites, or contacts known sources, for maritime industry photographs (ships, etc.) for inclusion in the union publications or posting on the website.
• Works with the Communications Director and the Graphic Designer to select an appropriate cover photo for each issue of the magazine.
• Writes simple obituaries, pension notices and scholarship award notices based on information provided by the union Health & Benefit Plans, as well as union members.
• Updates an Excel spreadsheet with the names of subscribers to the electronic newsletter and uploads the spreadsheet to the e-mail house on a weekly basis.
• Works with organization contacts to monitor, update, and post to MM&P Facebook page and Twitter account.
• Maintains the Excel spreadsheet of “complimentary” subscriptions to the magazine.
• Updates, on a weekly basis, the share prices of mutual funds for inclusion in the weekly newsletter: the material is automatically collected in a Yahoo “portfolio”: only requirement is to cut and paste.
• Other duties and writing projects as assigned.
Requirements and Skills:
• Very good writing and proofreading skills.
• Attention to detail.
• Knowledge and skill with standard computer programs.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to present information clearly, concisely, and effectively.
• Familiarity with and a proclivity to use social media.
Qualifications:
• Communications, Journalism, Graphic Arts or Marketing major.
• Junior, Senior or Graduate student preferred.
• Pre-employment background screening.
