The Maryland-DC Campus Compact will be holding their 10th Annual Service-Learning & Civic Engagement Conference on Saturday, April 1, 2017. This year’s theme is Be the Spark for Action.
UMBC has hosted this event twice: first in 2008, planned and implemented by members of the Shriver Living Learning Community ("Solutions Through Service") and then in 2013 ("Getting Real About Civic Engagement"). The committee JUST released a call for award nominations to recognize the outstanding impact of students, faculty, staff and community partners to service-learning and civic engagement in higher education.

Service-Learning at The Shriver Center has very active partnerships, which continue to grow. Last year, the Service-Learning Team connected with 74 partners on and off campus through weekly service and intentional reflective activities. Last year (FY16), through data collected through UMBCworks (Student Self Evaluations and Placement Evaluations), students reported:
Several community partners have significant openings - all can be found on the attached Service Chart. For the most part, when it is stated "Monday-Thursday," OR "Monday and Wednesday," it means the site operates Monday through Thursday, or you can choose to serve either Monday or Wednesday, NOT that you have to volunteer all of those days:

Some of these sites are closed, based on capacity and/or timing of orientation. This includes Best Buddies, Saint Agnes Hospital, Saturday BARCS, and Esperanza Center (as a group). Great Kids Farm Manager Brooks Binau (an Alum with The Shriver Peaceworker Fellows Program) is seeking an AmeriCorps position at the Great Kids Farm to work as his assistant for the next year starting in September (a year-long opportunity). This could be a great fit for someone interested in a service year learning sustainable farming, volunteer coordination and more…Great Kids Farm continues to be a Service-Learning Site through which UMBC students have had great experiences.

The National Urban League National Convention, under the auspices of the Greater Baltimore Urban League, will be held in Baltimore August 3rd-6th, 2016. This is an historic event for the city of Baltimore as this is the first time the National Urban League has held its convention in Baltimore. There will be several national speakers at the conference, including the presidential candidates. This weeklong event will feature events and activities for all ages and interests including exhibits, workshops and discussions focused on the theme "Save Our Cities", a career fair, hackathon, several top tier keynote speakers and a number of networking events. It is a true reflection of the broad mission and strategies of the Urban League movement. More on the conference is found at: http://conference.gbul.org/
With this backdrop, we want the many visitors to witness the greatness of Baltimore and the congeniality of its residents. The convention site is the Baltimore Convention Center and the 10,000 guests will be housed in all the major hotels. Therefore, we are recruiting 600 volunteers. Volunteer assignments are varied, and range from stuffing registration bags to greeting attendees to conducting mock interviews at the career fair. Each volunteer is also invited to attend all non-ticketed events -- including the presidential forum -- of the conference at no cost. (Example ticketed events are luncheons or receptions).

Based on your interests and time availability listed on your registration form, your role will be assigned at the orientation. The Aspen Institute's Youth & Engagement team launched an application recruiting an inaugural cohort of Youth Commissioners to advise the Aspen Institute’s National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development. The work of the Youth Commission, alongside the National Commission, has the potential to transform education and create more equitable, holistic, and effective systems for students.
Young people, ages 14 to 22 years old, residing in the Washington Metropolitan region, who work well in group settings, think outside the box, and are civic-minded & eager to engage with fellow youth around exploring complex issues are encouraged to apply.
The turnaround time is TIGHT, with the first round cycle closing this Thursday, July 21st.

The Youth Commission will be comprised of approximately 15 Commissioners, selected based on:
· the strength of their application;
· one academic, extracurricular, or professional reference;
· their demonstrated interest in the field;
· and an in-person conversation to be conducted on Monday, July 25th, 2016 at the One Dupont Circle office.
Over the course of the next two years, the Youth Commission will join the National Commission in exploring existing policy and practice relating to social, emotional, and academic development, while also taking active steps to improve upon the current state of social and emotional development in schools by recommending policies, programs, and strategies in a culminating report. Youth Commissioners will be compensated for their participation with a modest stipend. Travel expenses will also be covered.
