    <div class="html-content"><div><strong><u>NOMINATE OUTSTANDING FOLKS/PARTNERS</u></strong></div><div><p><span>The Maryland-DC Campus Compact will be holding their 10</span><sup><span>th</span></sup> Annual Service-Learning &amp; Civic Engagement Conference on <span><span>Saturday, April 1, 2017</span></span>. This year’s theme is <strong><em><u>Be the Spark for Action</u></em></strong>. </p><p><br></p><p>UMBC has hosted this event twice:  first in 2008, planned and implemented by members of the Shriver Living Learning Community ("Solutions Through Service") and then in 2013 ("Getting Real About Civic Engagement"). The committee JUST released a call for award nominations to recognize the outstanding impact of students, faculty, staff and community partners to service-learning and civic engagement in higher education. </p><p> </p><p><span>Award nominations are due </span><strong><span><span><span>Monday, February 6, 2017</span></span></span></strong><span>. <Title>Your fall schedule settled, now consider Service-Learning!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div><div><p><span>Service-Learning at The Shriver Center has very active partnerships, which continue to grow.  Last year, the Service-Learning Team connected with 74 partners on and off campus through weekly service and intentional reflective activities.  Last year (FY16), through data collected through UMBCworks (Student Self Evaluations and Placement Evaluations), students reported:</span></p><p></p><ul><li>70% agreed that their ability to view their career expectations realistically increased as a result of their applied learning experience;</li><li>74% indicated that they applied their education to their applied learning experience;</li><li>80% indicated that their self-confidence increased as a direct result of their applied experience;</li><li>86% indicated that their ability to solve problems increased as a result of their applied learning experience;</li><li>86% agreed that participating in applied learning helped them to grow as a leader;</li><li>90% indicated that their awareness of civic responsibilities increased as a direct result of their applied experience;</li><li>93% recommend an internship/work/co-op-research/service placement to another student.</li></ul><br><span><div><span><br></span></div>This semester alone, we've added @ 10 partners to include Patterson Park Audobon Center, Meade Senior High School's AVID Program, and the Choice Program's Education Team at Ben Franklin High School. </span>Each year, we receive more requests from nonprofits and schools to host enthusiastic and talented UMBC students at their organizations.     <div class="html-content"><div><br></div><div><div><div><div>Please join the Urban League movement as a volunteer ... and invite your friends, family and colleagues to do the same!</div><div><br></div><div><p><span>The National Urban League National Convention, under the auspices of the Greater Baltimore Urban League, will be held in Baltimore August 3<sup>rd</sup>-6<sup>th</sup>, 2016. </span><span>This is an historic event for the city of Baltimore as this is the first time the National Urban League has held its convention in Baltimore. There will be several national speakers at the conference, including the presidential candidates.  </span><span>This weeklong event will feature events and activities for all ages and interests including exhibits, workshops and discussions focused on the theme "Save Our Cities", a career fair, hackathon, several top tier keynote speakers and a number of networking events.  It is a true reflection of the broad mission and strategies of the Urban League movement.  More on the conference is found at:  <a href="http://conference.gbul.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://conference.gbul.org/</a></span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>With this backdrop, we want the many visitors to witness the greatness of Baltimore and the congeniality of its residents. </span><span>The convention site is the Baltimore Convention Center and the 10,000 guests will be housed in all the major hotels.  </span><span>Therefore, we are recruiting 600 </span><span>volunteers</span><span>.  Volunteer assignments are varied, and range from stuffing registration bags to greeting attendees to conducting mock interviews at the career fair.  <strong>Each volunteer is also invited to attend all non-ticketed events -- including the presidential forum -- of the conference at no cost. </strong>(Example ticketed events are luncheons or receptions).   </span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>Volunteer Orientation Sessions have since passed, but volunteers are still needed!</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>Based on your interests and time availability listed on your registration form, your role will be assigned at the orientation.  P</span><span>lease register to volunteer using the</span><span> </span><a href="http://conference.gbul.org/volunteer-signup-form/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Volunteer Registration Form</a> to complete your free conference registration.     <div class="html-content"><blockquote><div><div><blockquote><div><blockquote><blockquote><blockquote><p><span>The Aspen Institute's Youth &amp; Engagement team launched an application recruiting an inaugural cohort of <strong>Youth Commissioners</strong> to advise the Aspen Institute’s <strong>National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development</strong>. Youth Commissioners will be compensated for their participation with a modest stipend.
