Repost: IMPORTANT Storytelling Roundtable Exploring the power of storytelling!
On December 2, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, join us in an engaging roundtable session dedicated to exploring the power of storytelling in various fields of study and practice. This event will be a stimulating and supportive environment where participants can share insights and experiences and foster connections. 

The event will feature four graduate students and storytellers: Chelsea Mays-Williams (LLC), Elaine MacDougall (LLC), Viridiana Colosio-Martinez (LLC), and Holly Turpin from the Storytelling Academy at Loughborough University. Each storyteller will share their unique perspectives on incorporating storytelling into their work. After all four have presented their insights, we will open the floor for an interactive discussion among attendees to connect with the projects and offer support and feedback.

We look forward to a vibrant exchange of ideas, stories, and inspiration that will enhance the work of everyone involved. Take advantage of this opportunity to be part of a dynamic conversation!

Celebrating TWO long-time Shriver Center Community Engaged Learning Leaders, Emmanuella Osei and Nardos Kebede.


Recently, Emmanuella Osei was selected as the Researcher of the Week for investigating food insecurity at UMBC. Continuing leadership beyond The Shriver Living Learning Community, Emmanuella serves as co-leader of Student Ambassadors through The Shriver Center’s Community Engaged Learning (CEL). Emmanuella organizes UMBC CEL Students to host Scholars from Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School who are awarded an engaging experience to UMBC for positive community behavior and scholastic achievement. Commodore Collegiates are Pre-K through 8th Grade students, 2 Scholars per grade who are joined by their family members and teachers. Nardos Kebede was selected as Rangel Graduate Fellow! Nardos serves as the Student Coordinator for the Sisters Academy of Baltimore, an independent, faith-based, middle school for girls in grades 5 – 8 located in southwest Baltimore whose mission is to empower students to become agents of transformation in their families, communities, and society. Please join us for an enlightening dialogue with fish philosopher, artist, and activist-scholar Zoe Todd.


This talk will explore the trajectories that guide my team's 'Critical Indigenous Fish Philosophy', starting with the fish philosophers that inform my current work. First and foremost, my late stepfather, Wayne Roberts, who was a Red River Métis scientist who passionately defended fish, amphibians, and all manner of creatures in his career in Alberta and ignited my passion for fish science when I was a child. I will also share how the work of founders of the discipline of Indigenous Studies, including Vine Deloria Jr and Leroy Little Bear, among others, shape my current thinking about fish, sovereignty and my team's efforts to build an anti-imperialist prairie fish science in our homelands.

Presenter Bio:

Zoe Todd (Citizen, Manitoba Métis Federation) is a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Indigenous Governance and Freshwater Fish Futures at Simon Fraser University. They are a fish philosopher, artist, and activist-scholar from Alberta working towards establishing better ways to honour collective human obligations to fish in the prairies. They are also a co-founder of the Institute for Freshwater Fish Futures (2018), which is an interdisciplinary collective of Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, scientists, lawyers, architects, journalists, historians, advocates, and trouble-makers working to acknowledge our collective responsibilities to fish and water across plural watersheds and homelands in Canada and internationally.

This past weekend, The Baltimore Sun's Education Section featured several Shriver Center-connected programs.  On page 2, "Combining teaching and learning;  opportunities in childhood education abound" highlights the work of The Maryland Early Childhood Leadership (MECLP). Longtime Shriver Living Learning Community junior Vunnathi Ankem, psychology, shares her experience of on-campus dining in "Food for thought:  dining halls celebrate cultural diversity and tackle food insecurity" (page 3). 

However, the article does not mention Retriever Essentials, a faculty, staff, and student partnership to tackle food insecurity in our university community. This campus-wide collaboration includes UMBC students through the Community Engaged Learning and the Shriver Peaceworker Fellows programs.

The TMA AmeriCorps VISTA implements high quality, high impact activities for the Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Center, a part of The Shriver Center at UMBC.  S/he/they will lead in the creation of a JEDI centered (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) digital library of resources for The Shriver Center and community partners.  S/he/they encourages community participation TRHT program initiatives such as Racial Healing Circles and “Lunch and Learns”.
