Election Night Extravaganza: Coffee and Conversation
Discuss our current political climate over coffee!
How are you feeling about the election? You might be faced with this question all the time, forced to confront the reality of our political state every time you turn on the news. It's safe to say that many of us are left feeling very powerless in the wake of what's been happening. So what do you want to talk about?
SGA's Election Night Extravaganza,is excited to bring to you Coffee and Conversation, an event based on discussion and forward-thinking. Coffee, tea, and other light refreshments will be served, and a group of panelists active in political analysis will answer questions followed by freeform discussion. During this critical time, we need to feel that there are actions we can take and ways we can discuss the hostility we see around us.
Coffee and Conversation will be on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 from 6-8pm in the Skylight Room.

Election Night Extravaganza Needs Volunteers!
Help with set-up and event logistics during Election Night

Every four years, the Student Government Association proudly holds the non-partisan Election Night Extravaganza as we await the announcement of our newly elected President, and to celebrate American democracy. The night will be filled with conversations and debates, games, music, prizes, pizza, and lots of balloons! Our goal is to make this election season an experience shared by our UMBC community where we all get involved and excited about political elections, and celebrate our democracy.
Election Night Extravaganza is designed by, the SGA, in collaboration with (seb), Resident Student Association, College Democrats, and College Republicans - and we need your help!
We are looking for volunteers throughout the night of Election Night Extravaganza in a variety of positions. Volunteers must attend the Mandatory Volunteer Meeting on 10/26/16 in ITE 102 from 12pm - 1pm, and be available from 4:30pm - 1:30am (there will be ample breaks, and you will not work the entire time!) at the event on 11/8/16.

UMBC SGA's Senate has several vacancies for the Fall 2016 semester!
We are currently seeking motivated students interested in working on initiatives with the UMBC campus to make positive change.
Senate meetings every Monday evening at 5:30pm in Commons 318 and Senators must attend the meeting in their entirety (meetings have no end time and have been known to run as late as 11:00pm). Senators are required to be a member of at two Shared Governance Committees on campus that meet at various times, in addition to working on initiatives.

Every four years, the Student Government Association proudly holds the non-partisan Election Night Extravaganza as we await the announcement of our newly elected President, and to celebrate American democracy. The night will be filled with conversations and debates, games, music, prizes, pizza, and lots of balloons! Our goal is to make this election season an experience shared by our UMBC community where we all get involved and excited about political elections, and celebrate our democracy.
In the weeks leading up the night of Election Night Extravaganza, the SGA, in collaboration with (seb), Resident Student Association, College Democrats, and College Republicans, will be holding events to build hype around Election Day. Come to each event with your ENE Passport to be entered to win awesome prizes on the night of Election Night Extravaganza!

SGA Announces New General Meetings for the UMBC Community

SGA is pleased to announce the new "General Meetings." Various departments and branches of the organization meet weekly - however, SGA rarely meets as a large group in a meeting. While we will continue to hold these weekly meetings, there might be a perception that those meetings are intimidating and don’t foster a welcoming environment for students interested in getting involved as well as they should. SGA wants to create a space for meaningful conversations about problems, challenges, and issues faced by our UMBC community. General Meetings are designed to address just that.
Each month, the SGA will facilitate conversations around topics that are “hot button” issues in our campus community. The meeting will begin with updates from SGA’s Executive Branch (including Department Directors) and Legislative Branch (Senate and Finance Board). These updates will help our UMBC community understand what exactly our SGA has been working on. Afterwards, we will begin our themed discussion in small groups. At the end of the night, we will determine next steps to make real change on campus.
The goal of the General Meetings is to do the following:
Provide a venue for SGA officials to share updates with the UMBC community
Increase SGA’s commitment of transparency
Networking opportunity for students to meet a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff for projects and initiatives
Discuss real problems on campus, and determine actionable initiatives
Get every person in our campus involved with SGA!

Help Us Fill the UMBC 50th Anniversary Time Capsule!
Calling all UMBC community members to submit items!
As a part of celebrating UMBC's 50th Anniversary this fall, Student Life is organizing a time capsule to be opened at UMBC's 100th Anniversary in 2066! We're calling on all members of the campus community to submit items (e.g., letters, artifacts, and pictures) that reflect UMBC as it is today and that are not readily found in the UMBC Archives.
We need the entire UMBC community's assistance with spreading this call for artifacts to all corners of the institution. Please paw and share this post with your respective office, department, division, organization, and/or group of friends!
Please note that there is a PDF at the bottom of the post that you can share.
Here are some questions UMBC community members may have regarding the time capsule along with some answers:
How do I submit something?
- Please bring all items to Student Life, Commons 336, by September 30, 2016.
- Each item should be accompanied by a 3x5 index card explaining what the item is, the significance of the item, and the name, campus role, and contact information of the submitter.
- If you have an item that is either too big or too valuable to put in the time capsule, please take the item to commonvision (Commons 309) to be photographed and considered for inclusion in the time capsule with the completed 3x5 index card.
Who should submit?
- Anyone from the UMBC community is invited to contribute items such as letters, artifacts, and pictures for consideration to be included in the time capsule.
- We encourage people to work together to submit on behalf of a student organization, office, department, class, or group.
When will the time capsule be sealed and reopened?
- The time capsule will be sealed in the Fall of 2016 and opened 50 years later in 2066.
Where will the time capsule live for 50 years?
- The time capsule will be on display in The Commons lobby.
Who will determine what gets included and what doesn't?
- A small committee of students, faculty, and staff will review all submissions for the time capsule and determine will be included in its original form.
- Any submissions not included in their original form will be scanned and added to the digital archives (i.e., stored electronically) and a note will be included in the time capsule about this digital archive.

The 2016-2017 SGA Senate and Finance Board are both looking for a Secretary that can record official minutes at meetings. The Finance Board is also looking to fill a board member vacancy
Senate meets every Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Finance Board meets every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Commons 318. You will be required to stay for the duration of the meeting. You will also be required to provide your own materials (e.g., laptop, charger, recorder, etc.) for these positions as needed.
Applications will be available until Friday, September 2nd at 11:59 pm.
