Hello UMBC students!
Do you have ideas about improvements that could be made to the campus? Have you ever thought about making something on campus function better? Apply for Prove It!
Prove It! is UMBC's annual campus change initiative. As part of the program, students will compete in teams of two or more for one of two $10,000 grants that are used to implement their own ideas on our main campus. The program is an opportunity to promote student innovation and creativity. It also serves as a reminder to UMBC students that anyone can be a part of improving and implementing lasting change on our campus.
The application will be attached to this announcement, and may be turned in at any point from now until Thursday, March 15 at 11:59:99 PM. All interested students should send their completed applications to sgaproveit@umbc.edu before the deadline.

Prove It! Sessions at the Commons!
Fostering ideas for change at UMBC
Do you have an idea for improvement on campus, but you're not sure where to start? Do you want to make our campus a better place, but you don't have a specific idea just yet? Come to one of our think tank sessions!
These sessions are designed to engage students in order to produce and flesh out viable ideas for improvements on campus. Any prospective Prove It! applicants are highly encouraged to attend, but attendance isn't limited to just those interested in the program. If you want to make our campus better in any was, these sessions are for you!
Two sessions will be held in the Student Organization Space on the second floor of the Commons. The first will take place on Wednesday, November 29, at 12-2:30 pm. The second will be on Friday, December 1 at 2-4 pm. Snacks will be provided, so come with a hunger for knowledge and food!

The 2017-2018 Senate is currently seeking qualified candidates to fulfill the position of Secretary to take minutes at all official meetings.
The Senate meets weekly (Mondays at 5:30 p.m.) to discuss and develop initiatives, talk with campus administrators and take positions on issues.
You will be required to stay for the duration of the meeting. You will also be required to provide your own materials (e.g., laptop, charger, recorder, etc.) for this position.
The deadline to apply for these positions is October 27th, 2017 at 11:59 p.m.!

Catonsville, MD: The UMBC Student Government Association would like to congratulate Senator and Speaker of the Senate Gerardo Herrera-Cortés on their recent election to the position of Vice Chairperson of the University Steering Committee.
The University Steering Committee is composed of two representatives from each of UMBC's shared governance groups -- the Faculty Senate, the Professional Staff Senate, the Non-Exempt Staff Senate, the Graduate Student Association, and the Student Government Association. The Committee meets monthly to advise the UMBC President and administration on policies affecting the campus community, including shared governance, with several different shared governance subcommittees reporting to the Steering Committee.
As Vice Chair, Gerardo will support the Chair and the members of the University Steering Committee in the activities and projects of the Committee. Congratualations, Gerardo!

UMBC SGA Senate Vacancy Application
Become a representative of the Undergraduates!
The 2017-18 Senate has several open Senator positions for the Fall 2017 semester. The deadline to apply is 1 October 2017 at 11:59 p.m.
Some responsibilities of Senators include:
- Foster open communication with the student body
- Represent the student voice to different parts of the UMBC community
- Take actions to improve our campus
- Take a stance on issues relating to any matters such as various policies and practices on campus
Senators are required to:
- Attend every Senate meeting, held weekly on Mondays at 5:30 pm in Commons, Room 318. These meetings have no specific end time, so you would need to be free the entire rest of the night
- Serve on University shared governance committees
- Work on initiatives with and on behalf of the student body

Adelphi, MD: The UMBC Student Government Association would like to congratulate SGA Senator Lilly Keplinger on her appointment and confirmation to the position of Deputy Director of Student Affairs for the University System of Maryland Student Council.
The University System of Maryland Student Council is one of four councils established during the restructuring of higher education in Maryland in 1988 to provide advice to the Chancellor and the Board of Regents. Each of the student government and graduate student associations within the USM send delegates to the Council and the Executive Board supports the Council's initiatives in various areas.
As Deputy Director of Student Affairs, Lilly will support the USM Student Council in various initiatives involving student affairs and student life and in providing advice to the Chancellor and the Board of Regents. Congratulations, Lilly!

UMBC Leaders Respond to DACA Decision

Catonsville, MD: Below is the campus response to the recent response to the Trump Administration's decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The SGA will soon be releasing a video campaign on this topic. Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
Following the Trump Administration’s decision today to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program—a pathway to work or college for undocumented individuals who arrived in the United States as children—campus leaders are working to support and advocate for DACA students and colleagues in our community.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced in a memorandum today that it would immediately stop accepting new applications for DACA, while protections for existing program participants will be phased out over time. Specifically, DHS has said that: - Individuals currently enrolled in DACA will be able to continue working until their permits expire. Permits are typically valid for two years from the date of issuance.
- DACA participants whose permits expire by March 5, 2018 will be permitted to apply for two-year renewals as long as they do so by October 5, 2017.
- New applications and renewal requests already received by DHS before today will be reviewed and validated on a case-by-case basis, even those for permits that expire after March 5, 2018.
- DHS will no longer accept new applications for advance parole to travel abroad under standards associated with the DACA program.
We stand firm in our support for undocumented students’ access to public education, particularly our own “Dreamers,” students of diverse backgrounds earning degrees at UMBC through provisions of the Maryland Dream Act. We are deeply concerned that the federal government has decided to remove the federal protections DACA has provided, after requiring undocumented young people to identify themselves in order to access higher education. It is morally unacceptable for these students to be at risk of deportation, and UMBC leaders will vigorously advocate for swift Congressional action to establish the protections of DACA in law.
First and foremost, we are prepared to respond to the uncertainty and fear that students and colleagues with DACA status are experiencing. We are consulting with campus and external experts to understand the collective and individual implications of the Federal policy change and identify options and resources available to members of our community.
In addition, President Hrabowski has joined USM Chancellor Robert Caret and other USM leaders in a forthcoming letter urging Maryland’s Congressional Delegation to advance legislation to maintain and extend DACA protections. This is consistent with UMBC’s November 2016 endorsement of a letter from college and university presidents across the nation citing the moral imperative and national necessity to provide DACA students a path to education and productive lives.
We affirm UMBC’s commitment to provide all of our students with a safe and supportive educational environment and will keep the campus community updated on developments related to DACA.
