Here are the updates on policies and initiatives from Monday’s Senate meeting (11/18).

Initiatives
  • Senate posted OCA Mocha vlog: 3rd episode of the vlog series.
  • OCA Mocha direct shuttle has been canceled.
  • ‘Cultural Calendar’ has been added to SGA Apps. Cultural Calendar gathers events from cultural organizations through myUMBC and posts them to the calendar.
  • SGA is conducting a Food Drive for Retriever Essentials through December 6.
  • Senate had a meeting with the Coordinator for Student Diversity and Inclusion and discussed the Interfaith Center (IFC); discussed having office hours for IFC, and small study rooms or rooms for bible study.
Shared Governance Committees
  • 3% projected tuition increase. Reason being renovations, minimum wage increase.
  • Changes to student portal were discussed at meeting with University Health Services. Additionally, changes to check-in process for students who don't identify with certain pronouns in order to make students feel more comfortable were discussed.
  • Blackboard is upgrading from Blackboard Learn to Blackboard Ultra in Fall 2021. Advantages: more accessible to users. Surveys reported positive feedback.
  • Proposal to make changes to PHYS 107 and 201 in order to make active learning possible for students.

We've confirmed with UMBC Transit that the OCA Mocha direct shuttle has been cancelled. UMBC Transit provides safe, reliable, responsive shuttle services to meet the transportation needs of the UMBC community, including the need for a cup of specialty coffee from OCA Mocha.

Hello Retrievers!

We're happy to announce that we will be conducting a food drive for Retriever Essentials! It's an exciting endeavor that we are hoping you will be able to join us in. 

“Widely reported research has shown surprising levels of hunger and homelessness among American college and university students. Some have been found living in their cars in campus parking lots; others rely on food banks, often stocked by classmates. Now colleges and universities themselves are pulling together more permanent solutions, often in collaboration with local housing authorities and non-profit partners.”
- Pacific Standard 2019

Unfortunately, food insecurity is a common experience that many UMBC students struggle with every semester. We are hoping to bring more awareness to Retriever Essentials and the many useful resources that it provides on campus. 

As such, we are hoping that you can donate to our food drive. Doing so will put your name in for one of three prizes we will be raffling out!

Raffle Prizes:
  1. Apple Airpods
  2. Google Nest Mini 
  3. $50 UMBC Bookstore Gift
Items that we will be receiving: 
  • Canned Vegetables: carrots, green beans, peas, potatoes (please no corn)
  • Healthy cereals: plain oatmeal, plain Cheerios and other healthy non-sugar sweetened cereals – please no Fruit Loops, Sugar Frosted Flakes or other unhealthy cereals
  • Protein: canned tuna, canned beans, canned chili, peanut butter
  • Canned fruits: canned fruit packed in its own juice or made with Splenda
  • Starch: brown Rice, pasta, macaroni and cheese
  • Miscellaneous: pasta sauce, soup (vegetarian especially), snacks (granola bars, individual servings of nuts)
  • Supplies: paper bags and canvas/reusable grocery bags
  • Clothing: coats, hats, gloves, scarves
In order to participate in the raffle you must:
  • Be a UMBC Undergraduate Student
  • Exchange a donation at either the SGA Office or our Senate Office Hours that are held in either the Breezeway or Main Street for a raffle ticket
  • 1 Raffle Ticket per Donation Item

The new interactive web-based mapping application provides easy access to a full range of UMBC’s many sustainability features, programs, and activities. http://bit.ly/UMBCSRM The interactive map provides information and links to a wide range of topics organized into the following categories: · Built Environment · Lifestyle · Natural Environment · Outdoor Air Quality · SGA Transit Activity Guides · Transportation · Retriever Essentials · UMBC Transit Each category is marked on an interactive map, which provides locations of notable features. Points of interest on the map include photos and links to additional information. Sustainability Matters will regularly update the map with new information.
