Finance Board Presents the SOAR Fund

<Tagline>Stimulus Funding for Student Organizations</Tagline>

Please see the message below regarding Student Organization Stimulus Funding presented by the SGA Finance Board:

Dear Student Organization Leaders,

Following the last year's unexpected turn in events, many UMBC student organizations haven't been able to easily convene and have routine meetings during the online semesters. As a way to increase involvement, promote sustained membership, and foster a sense of community on campus, UMBC's SGA Finance Board has introduced a financial stimulus reward (SOAR) for all active UMBC undergraduate student organizations for the 2021-2022 academic year only. This reward will be used as a way to aid the smooth transition into more in-person extracurricular activities on campus. The legislation passed by Finance Board can be found at the following link.

Through SOAR, each of the 214 active UMBC student organizations will be given access to approximately $210.25 of funding, which is an evenly divided portion of the total $45,000 allocated for this program. Each student organization will be allowed to access their SOAR funds starting Monday, August 16th, 2021 until Sunday, May 1st, 2022. Student Organizations do not have to submit any application or receive an approval from Finance Board to use these funds. These funds will not be reflected in a Student Organization's carryover account, but are still available. It is important to remember that any purchases using this funding must comply with the State and University purchasing guidelines. Equipment purchases as outlined by the Equipment Committee cannot be funded by SOAR funds.

Student Organizations will be able to access this funding by submitting a RESGAF indicating that they would like to utilize SOAR funds for an expense in the Description Field. An example has been included in this post. Student Organization Treasurers will be able to request information about how much money they still have in this special allocation by contacting SABSC.

If you have any questions about this or any other Finance Board related item, please reach out to your Finance Board Liaison.
Online Leadership Challenge Day 8

<Tagline>Ongoing Learning & Challenge Conclusion</Tagline>

Now that we’re at the end of our challenge, we will go over some suggestions for practice. But first, I want to take a moment to tie the loop and talk about Emotionally Intelligent Leadership (EIL). This leadership development model combines two bodies of literature: emotional intelligence and leadership.

At the most basic levels: Emotional intelligenceis about recognizing and regulating emotions in ourselves and others.Leadershipis about influencing others to engage in a purpose or cause. EIL consists of focusing on self, others, and context— using these facets helped create the Online Leadership Challenge topics; self-awareness & reflection, social identities, leader identity, values, groups & teams, partnerships, and social change. The following suggestions for practice will touch on all the topics we went over together throughout the challenge:

1. Get to know YOU: Be known as someone who seeks out, and is open to, feedback. Exist in a continuous state of reflection.

2. Seek out challenge and support: Associate with people who challenge and support you. Seek out environments that will help you grow and that help you become your best self.

3. Nurture your relationships: Once you create a connection, you must continue to nurture the relationship so that it strengthens. The best way to do this is by listening and being present.

4. Communication is key: Consider the ways you communicate within a group or team. Do you voice your ideas? Do you build on or add to others? Do you take time to listen? Are you comfortable with silence?

5. Know that we all have a part in the leadership process: Active group members are committed to the organization and its purpose. Not only do they do what is expected of them, but are proactive and willing to fill gaps.

6. You have the capacity to be an agent of change: It requires embracing creative problem solving, risk taking and courage.
Online Leadership Challenge Day 6

<Tagline>Partnerships</Tagline>

This week we focused on relationships and groups, today we will touch on partnerships. Leadership exists through powerful relationships. Leadership itself is relational. No one can be a leader alone. Often the greatest leaders have a partner who can see their true selves and can challenge the leader’s thinking. When you have partnerships, you have the built-in trust in the relationship that allows for mutual feedback. Receiving feedback is beneficial to leaders because it allows for them to grow and develop. Partners also act as supporters and even confidants, and are essential when it comes to moving forward with initiatives or creating change. They help fuel you when your cup is running empty. The power this type of relationship has makes possibilities endless.

“All change, even very large and powerful change, begins when a few people start talking with one another.” Margaret Wheatley

“Who expects you to be somebody?” Tom Rath

Day 6 Challenge Questions:

What are your reactions to these thoughts?
