Queer Leadership and Navigating Leadership in the New Normal
About the Presenter:
Simone Loysen (They/He) is a Junior English Major on the Communication and Technology Track at UMBC. Outside of UMBC, they play ice hockey and love to crochet! They believe that leadership is the act of guiding someone towards a bright future. Whether through official leadership (being in SGA, LPF, president of a club, etc.) or unofficial leadership (helping a friend, teaching a sibling, etc.), they believe that the act of leading directly impacts other people's lives for the better. Their goals as a Leadership Peer Facilitator (LPF) are to gain experience leading workshops and become able to clearly articulate leadership topics to others. Outside of being an LPF, they are a part of many clubs including the LGBTQ+ Student Union and UMBC Crafters and they also play for the UMBC Ice Hockey Team!

About the Leadershops:

Queer Leadership: This session will empower the queer community at UMBC towards becoming strong leaders. Attendees will explore the importance of authentic leadership, and learn how to use identity to strengthen leadership skills.

Navigating Leadership in the New Normal: We have seen many unforeseen challenges, and its impact to the world as we knew it. This session will address leadership in the dreaded Zoom call as well as leadership for students that aren't as engaged as they may have been in the past.

Join our Team! Being a Woolie is a fun leadership position for undergraduate students, where you meet lots of great people, learn interesting facts about UMBC, and help create a fun, informative welcome program for new students. 

Welcome Week Leaders (Woolies) are ambassadors for UMBC, and facilitate Welcome Week for new students at UMBC. Woolies develop relationships with new students, engage with Welcome Week events, and also help with the logistics of Welcome Week. Woolies are here to support new students and their transition to college by sharing their personal student experiences, valuable resources, and important upcoming events and opportunities.

Interested students can attend an information session TODAY Monday, March 28, 2022 at 4:30 p.m. in Public Policy 105. (Attendance is not required to apply.)

  • UMBC and area positivity rates have allowed us to revisit our current health and safety measures. 

  • Effective March 4, 2022, masking is optional for every space with exceptions to all academic spaces, instructional labs, performance spaces, designated masking areas, healthcare settings, on UMBC Transit, and in other limited areas.

Happy Monday Retrievers! As COVID protocols proceed to lessen due to the continued patience, support, and vaccination of UMBC and surrounding communities, we would like to remind you that it is still the responsibility of the entire community to continue following basic health protocols such as routine hand washing/sanitizing, monitoring symptoms, and the continuation of wearing masks in these specific areas:

  • All academic spaces and classrooms 

  • Instructional labs

  • Performance spaces

  • Designated masking areas

  • Healthcare settings

  • UMBC Transit

  • Other limited areas

All other areas such as the RAC and Commons have optional masking protocols set in place. It is still to be expected that our community respects individual decisions to wear masks and carry a mask with them.

Join our Team! Being a Woolie is a fun leadership position for undergraduate students, where you meet lots of great people, learn interesting facts about UMBC, and help create a fun, informative welcome program for new students. Applications for the 2022 cycle are due on April 1, 2022. Woolies are paid a $250 stipend and receive a number of other perks!

Welcome Week Leaders (WOOLIES) are ambassadors for UMBC, and facilitate Welcome Week for new students at UMBC. Woolies develop relationships with new students, engage with Welcome Week events, and also help with the logistics of Welcome Week. Woolies are here to support new students and their transition to college by sharing their personal student experiences, valuable resources, and important upcoming events and opportunities.

Interested students can attend one of two information sessions. One on Tuesday, March 15th at 11am in Commons 329 (limited seating) and one on Monday, March 28th at 4:30pm in Public Policy 105.
