Deveraux Smith is a great ambassador of this initiative under the umbrella of S.O.L.D.I.E.R.S. Outreach, a 501 C-3 non-profit that serves communities in two counties/states: Prince George's County, MD and Atlanta, GA. Deveraux completed his undergraduate degree at UMBC in May 2016, and is continuing his graduate work in the Applied Sociology Department.
This Saturday, 11/19, Deveraux and his team hope to engage 20 Giant supermarkets throughout PG County from 9am-3pm. They are seeking volunteers for the day (or in 3-hour increments). There is a chance that a Shriver Center van might be available - not guaranteed at this time (would leave UMBC @ 8 am). For more info, go to http://www.kidseatfreenow.com or check out the attachment below. You can also make donations - go to the GoFund me page at https://www.gofundme.com/KEFOutreach
We are also exploring ways to develop this partnership into one of our service-learning placements. This Friday, Deveraux set up a meeting with the Service-Learning team and leaders of the Destination Home Student Organization, who have already engaged with this program. If you are interested in connecting with this program, contact Lori Hardesty at lleonard@umbc.edu.
