The Reading Corps employs and trains full time Americorps members to serve as literacy tutors in high need elementary schools and early childhood centers in Washington, DC and Alexandria, VA.Tutors work with students from age 3 to grade 3 because in third grade there is a shift from learning to read to reading to learn.

To ensure your success, and the success of your students, Reading Corps provides:
--A 5-day summer institute to train you in AmeriCorps procedures and literacy interventions and assessments
--A multi-tiered support structure composing of school staff at your site, a literacy expert in the field, and program staff in their office.
--Ongoing professional development through Reading Corps workshops and monthly meetings with a Professional Learning Group.
--AmeriCorps benefits including: A modest living stipend, health insurance, student loan forbearance, and an education award of $5,730 upon successful completion of the program to pay back federal student loans, or future tuition costs.
