This Monday! SEB Cinema Series: OUTRAGE
I'm hoping that everyone has purchased their Raekwon tickets for tonight's event. If not, we'll be selling them at the door so bring your friends! The show is going to be great - I doubt you want to miss out.
In addition to our weekly movies, SEB hosts a cinema series that features thought-provoking works and documentaries on interesting topics while providing a forum for discussion. This year, the cinema series has been more successful than ever before and has proved to be a great networking event, connecting students with shared interests and passions. Last month, we showed Food Inc., a really intriguing documentary about the American food industry.
Monday, November 16, we will be showing Outrage, a documentary that puts a spotlight on closeted gay members of Congress that consistently support anti-gay legislation. Obviously, this is quite strange and raises a few questions. Is it ethical for the filmmakers to out these politicians? Is it okay for these politicians to vote the way they do, even though it's not consistent with the way they live their lives? Does this, in a sense, allow these legislators to live above the law?
These questions are all addressed in the film. I've been lucky enough to see most of it and thought that it was very well-done and interesting, to say the least. The subject is definitely controversial, but it's important for this campus to address these topics and share viewpoints. SO, you are all formally invited to attend this event! For those of you who don't know much about The Chef, Raekwon is a member of the Wu-Tang Clan. His newest album debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and was number 2 on the Hip-Hop and R&B chart. If you're still not sold, take a look at these comments on the new album said by Raekwon himself:
It’s damn near 200% done. I wanna drop it on a major, but you’re definitely gonna get it by the summer of next year. By hook or crook. If I gotta do it independent, I gotta release it. I did a lot of hard work on this record and I refuse to throw it out and people be like, 'Yo, Rae, I ain’t know your shit was out.' Nah, I can’t afford for that to happen no more. Plus, the NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) in conjunction with SEB will be hosting the Official Raekwon Afterparty directly after the show. All in all, it's going to be a great night.

This year has been really great so far. Welcome Week was awesome and everyone had a lot of fun. If you missed out or want to see a good summary of the week (or maybe even spot yourself in some photos!) check out the Welcome Week gallery on the 2nd floor of the Commons. There was so much dancing, too many balloons, and lots of moments that became memories.
Finally, if you're sticking around on campus this weekend, don't miss out on the fun things happening. If you like movies, Transformers 2 is playing today (for $2) and tomorrow (FOR FREE!). If you like music, don't miss Reggae Night tonight in Lower Flat Tuesdays at 9pm. Woo & the Yellow Dubmarine and Tillers Prospect will craft a night we won't soon forget. So spring break is almost over, and if you're an on-campus student, you're moving back in today. Hopefully your spring break was a chance to hang out, relax, and maybe go crazy. If not, don't worry, because SEB is giving you that chance in LESS THAN A MONTH with QUADMANIA!
That's right! QUADMANIA is coming up really quickly. While you've been cruising, beaching, going to canada to escape the cold Baltimore winter (wtf, Jenna!), or just working in The Commons anyway, SEB has been hard at work preparing.
Now it's your chance to prepare. Are you in a Student Organization? Council of Majors? Club Sport? Intellectual Sport? Activism Group? Poodle Fanclub? All SGA-approved student groups are eligible to reserve a booth at Quadmania 2009 for the Saturday outdoor carnival and live music stage. This puts your student org right in the heart of all of the action. Raise awareness of your cause! Sell cupcakes! Recruit members for next Fall! Do whatever!
Check out the Facebook event (and awesome poster -designed by Jenna Ullrich and Tazuko Sugajima) for information on how your student org can get in on the action. And if you have a roommate / BFF / classmate / facebook acquaintance that you know is in a student organization, or is even a president/vice president, make sure to mention this awesome opportunity. SEB Is bringing the ferris wheel and a couple thousand people, so this is a great chance to be seen!

I heard a secret rumor that Girl Talk tickets are going on sale soon!
Ticket sale begins Wednesday, February 25th at noon at The Commons Information Center. They are $15 each, and you are allowed to purchase two. Bring your UMBC ID, as we will be enforcing the two per student policy!
The show itself is going to be Sunday, April 26th, the weekend after Quadmania.
These tickets are going to sell out (probably the same day they go on sale), because Girl Talk has sold out every show he's played recently in the Baltimore/DC area (9:30 Club, Sonar), and because it is going to be in the UC Ballroom. If you want tickets, plan on lining up early, or make plans with a friend who can get you your ticket, etc. We will not be letting people "save spots" or anything like that. No funny business!
