How to be a Better Ally: Black Male Youth
Tuesday, February 20, 4 - 5:30 p.m. in Commons: 329
This co-facilitated workshop series that focuses on various
underrepresented and/or marginalized populations. Our goal of the series is to provide UMBC community members with the basic practices for allyship, specifically for the highlighted target population. This workshop session will highlight best practices to be allies to Black male youth after a brief discussion on the Black Male Youth experience. All undergrads, grads, staff and faculty are encouraged to attend!

Mundo Lingo: Conversation Café Deluxe
Wednesday, February 21, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the Commons: Gameroom
An expansion of the ELI’s Conversation Café which is an open meeting,
where any student can come for casual conversation, learn more about the Mosaic, and fun group activities. Snacks, games, and ice-breaker activities will be provided and then attendees are left to freely converse in an informal atmosphere. This is a great opportunity for you to get involved with becoming a conversation partner or Mosaic programming. Position Title: Community Engagement Intern

Position Type: Part-time, Undergraduate

General Description: The Community Engagement Intern works with the Residential Education and Leadership Coordinator to create opportunities for resident-led community engagement. The Intern will assist with the development and implementation of the Residence Life Student-Led Initiative program and will work collaboratively with Community Councils to increase student engagement and collaboration within residential areas and beyond.

Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinate marketing and application process for the Student-Led Initiative program
  2. Assist in the development of collaborative programming initiatives with campus partners, including, but not limited to, student organizations
  3. Serve as chair for the Community Involvement Committee to support large-scale social and weekend initiatives
  4. Assist with marketing and promotion for the Residential Curriculum. This may include, but is not limited to, Move-In/Move-Out, Orientation, Homecoming, and other campus-wide strategies
  5. Support and encourage student leaders in the development of an effective Community Council
  6. Support Resident Assistants serving as Community Council Liaisons
  7. Assist with training and leadership development for the Community Council Leaders throughout the academic year
  8. Serve as a resource for the Community Council in the planning and implementation of strategies and events for the residential community.

Minimum Qualifications:         

●      Must exhibit good written & verbal communication skills

●      Must have proactive work habits

●      Must be committed to being a role model and making a positive impact on the UMBC community

●      Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and may not be on conduct probation

●      Must be willing to work for the entire semester for at least 8 hours/week

●      Must be a full-time, matriculating student at UMBC

●      Must be able to commit to 2 academic semesters (preferred, Fall and Spring semesters)

 Special / Preferred Skills: 

●      Experience working with program development, residential students, marketing,

Pay rate:  Starting at $10.10 per hour

Simple actions that can protect you... The flu is a respiratory illness with sudden onset of symptoms that can include a fever of over 100ºF, body aches, sore throat, headache, and cough.

Don't let it get you...

  • Get a flu shot, it is not too late! UHS gave out 450 flu shots this season and while we do not have any more shots, they are available throughout the community.
  • Wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizing stations located around campus.
  • Avoid those who are ill, if you can.
  • Clean surfaces that you or others touch frequently in your room and/or office with anti-bacterial cleaner (bleach wipes are effective).
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve--not your hands--and wash your hands immediately.
  • Avoid touching your face, whether you are ill or healthy; it spreads germs.
  • Avoid sharing food, utensils, cups, and water bottles.
  • If you are sick, stay home and in bed. Avoid crowded places like dining halls, classrooms, restaurants, and the RAC or other fitness centers to prevent spreading illness to others. 
  • Take fever reducers like acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil), or naproxen (Aleve) if you do have a fever. If your fever persists for more than three days in spite of taking these medications, please seek medical care.
  • Drink lots of fluids.
  • If you have been diagnosed with the flu and develop shortness of breath and severe fatigue, call your health care provider or go to an emergency room.
