UPDATE!!! Zareen's Hazara family members fleeing Afghanistan Supporting Zareen and Ali to support others in danger
UPDATE!!!! THANK YOU to everyone who donated and shared! You all are amazing. We've raised enough to cover ALL 8 of the humanitarian parole applications. I'm going to raise the fundraising limit to and see if we can't start raising funds for some of the visa applications and plane tickets for Zareen and Ali's family members.

Zareen and Ali are dear friends and colleagues of many of us and we know that they work tirelessly to advocate for the rights of people from their country of origin, Afghanistan. Both Zareen and Ali come from an ethnic minority group in Afghanistan, the Hazara, who have been brutally targeted by extremists; Zareen has written extensively on the issue for Ms. Magazine and other outlets.

At the present, Zareen and Ali are working to help bring 8 family members from Pakistan here to Baltimore. These family members have already survived harrowing ordeals to leave Afghanistan. They left Afghanistan with nothing. Zareen and Ali are the main financial supporters of them right now. While Zareen and Ali have been able to get pro-bono legal counsel for these family members, they want to file Humanitarian Parole forms to bring them here to the United states. The fee for each applicant is $575.00. Right now, They need help to cover the fees to file the Humanitarian Parole applications and for them to get visas. Eventually, each of the 8 family members will need a plane ticket to come to Baltimore and some support locally while they get settled and find work. All 8 of the family members are in danger because of their ethnic minority status and several were also being targeted because of aid work they engaged in while in Afghanistan.

A new academic year is on the horizon, and UMBC students will be back on the campus.  Join us for a drive-in “Share-a-Thon,” to collect healthy, non-perishable foods, toiletries, and select cold-weather gear [hats, gloves, scarves] for students facing financial or housing challenges.  Cash donations [in person or online] are also welcome.  We’ll meet and collect donations at Parking Lot 22 (off Wilkens Avenue and Hilltop Road near the PAHB) on campus.  We look forward to greeting you during the event. 

To donate food, toiletries or fund them remotely, you can place an Amazon Wish LIst order on their website.   Lists of needed items to donate in person can also be identified from the food and toiletries listings in their website, Retriever Essentials

Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) conference is organized by American Democracy Project (ADP) and NASPA to bring together faculty, student affairs professionals, senior campus administrators, students, and community partners. The theme for the 2021 virtual conference is “Defining the Path Forward.” 

On June 4th at 1.30 pm, Fariha Khalid, Samantha Fries, Faith Davis, and Erin Kosloski from UMBC will be presenting in a Civic Cafe Session at CLDE, “Improving Basic Needs Access on College Campus.” They will discuss the findings of a mixed-methods community-based research on food and basic needs insecurity among UMBC students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, they will highlight the role of Retriever Essentials in supporting vulnerable populations of our campus community. By the end of the session, participants are expected to understand the phenomenon of basic needs insecurity, share best practices to address the problem, and exchange knowledge/skills to form an ongoing network of resources.

During her work with Retriever Essentials, Sarah researched food insecurity on college campuses in Maryland. We are so proud of you Sarah! 

"In collaboration with the UMBC food pantry, Retriever Essentials, I am conducting geospatial analyses and generating online webmaps that assess the pervasive issue of food insecurity among Maryland college students, to recommend how institutional food pantries can implement operational best practices to effectively meet student need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Current research states that approximately one-third of all students at two- and four- year institutions face food and housing insecurity while earning a degree. Through geospatial analysis on food and poverty rates in Maryland, my research illustrates the connection between federally recognized poverty areas and food insecurity rates to which institutions, based on their location and institution type, are most likely to provide food resources to their students. We identified campus pantry points-of-contact, and conducted a semi-structured survey to understand campus pantry operations and services in more detail, along with assessing how analyses on how COVID-19 has impacted a pantry’s ability to provide the resources needed by their students. Retriever Essentials and I plan to utilize the data as part of a comprehensive effort to assess the availability of food and basic needs resources on Maryland college campuses, and what campuses can do to better connect students with these resources."

In addition to items for our Campus Food Pantry we are starting a Mini Pantry located in the Campus Police Station that will be available for community members 24/7. Please be sure that donated items are easy to open without additional tools (pop-top and tear open). We are in need of the following items...
