If you're a currently enrolled, degree-seeking student at UMBC, you are eligible to enroll for Spring 2017 courses during advance registration. The Schedule of Classes will be available online Monday, October 24th and advance registration will begin Tuesday, November 1st. Meeting with your advisor is required prior to registration.
Five Steps to Successful Advising, Course Selection, and Registration for Spring 2017
- Look up your earliest registration time, which is based on your earned credits (including transfer courses, but not "in progress" Fall 2016 courses).
- Make an appointment to meet with your academic advisor in your major department well before your earliest registration time. Updated departmental advising information is available for main campus students and Shady Grove students as well. Students without a declared major or in transition between majors should contact the Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising to make an advising appointment.
- Next, review your degree audit (in myUMBC under Advising and Student Support) in conjunction with the academic pathway document to identify courses you need to complete your degree program in a timely manner. Advisors expect you to do this before you meet with them.
- Meet with your advisor to discuss your educational goals, your long-term plan, and your courses for Spring 2017. Your advisor will enter advising clearance into the registration system. You will turn that proposed course list into an actual schedule with times and section numbers.
- Register for your classes at your earliest registration time. Check your final schedule carefully to ensure that it reflects the plan you discussed with your advisor. Registration instructions are available if you need to refresh your memory.
Address Registration Blocks and Holds Early!
Check your myUMBC account now to be sure you have no outstanding obligations to the university that could prevent you from registering, i.e., past due balances, vaccinations, etc. If you have an administrative hold that would prevent you from registering, you will receive a separate myUMBC alert.
Meeting with More than One Advisor
Students with double majors, minors, and pre-professional programs will obtain registration clearance from the advisor in their primary major and obtain additional advice as needed from supplementary advisors. For example, students pursuing education certificates will also need to see an advisor in the Education Department. Students pursuing careers in the health professions usually need to see more than one advisor.
