Alternative Spring Break

The Alternative Spring Break 2018 Participant Application is NOW LIVE! Alternative Spring Break (ASB) will take place from March 18 to March 23, 2018. The application is availablehere or can be found at tinyurl.com/ASB2018UMBC. Applications are Due November 22, 2017, by 11:59 p.m. 


ASB consists of several student-run, week-long, service-learning trips that provide an opportunity for students to spend a week during Spring Break learning about and contributing to addressing social issues by working with community partners and government entities. This year’s trips focus on social issues such as:

  • Public Health

  • Health Education

  • Food Access & Food Insecurity

  • Economic Disparity

Each trip is led by a Trip Leader and all trips will take place in Baltimore to better connect students to the city and introduce them to opportunities for long-term community engagement beyond ASB.

1. Trust your instincts. If you feel alarmed, scared or creepy in any situation, go with your gut. If you see something spooky, contact the local Police immediately 911 from an off-campus location, 410-455-5555 from an on-campus location.

2.Travel in groups! Avoid being alone or isolated with a vampire – – or any creature – – who you don’t know or trust. Make sure a dependable friend knows where you are and who you are with at all times. Don’t leave your group with anyone you’re not sure of – even if he or she asks. Say you’d rather stay with the group.

3.Check in with your friends throughout All Hallow’s Eve. Form a buddy system so that no one wanders off alone. Agree on a secret “butt in” signal for uncomfortable situations, such as “Ghost” or “Ghoul!”

4.Don’t accept “potion” from people you don’t know or trust and never leave your “potion” unattended. If you lose sight of your “potion,” get a new one, and always watch your “potion” being prepared.

5. Watch out for your friends, and don’t be afraid to intervene if a situation appears to be scaring your friend or is frightening you. If your friend seems too drunk or is acting abnormally, get them to a safe place immediately.

6. Even when our students take precautions, we know that scary situations can happen, and if the do, UMBC is here to help.  If you need immediate assistance call University Police: 410-455-5555 or talk to your RA to be connected with resources.

UMBC Volleyball vs. Stony Brook, Friday, October 27, 2017 at 7:00pm in the RAC.  Trick or Treat, the first 100 fans will receive a bag of candy,

Zombie Bash 1, Friday, October 27, 2017 beginning at 7:00pm in Meyerhoff Chemistry 030. Come join us for the first part of Zombie Bash as we run a special Halloween-themed Mission! Costumes are strongly encouraged, but not required. Upon conclusion of the Mission, we will proceed to the Apartment Community Center to commence part 2 of this event. Zombie Bash 2, Friday, October 27, 2017 beginning at 9:00pm in the Residential Life Apt. Community Center.  Come join us for the second part of our annual Halloween-themed event! This part of the event is an after-party in which players can relax, have fun, and socialize! Costumes are still strongly encouraged, but not required. We also recommend bringing any board games that you might have if you wish to play them with your friends!

E-Cycling, Monday, October 30, 2017 beginning at 7:30am. Need to recycle your electronic items?   Bring your electronics (no refrigerators) to the Courtyard located between the Sherman Buildings A and B Wings on Monday, October 30, 2017.   Personal items will be accepted from 7:30 am until 2:00 pm.  University items will be accepted between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Applications are NOW OPEN for the 2018 UMBC STRiVE Leadership Retreat (January 8 - 12, 2018) offered by Student Life and the Student Government Association. 

STRiVE is an intensive and engaging off-campus leadership retreat (5 days, 4 nights) developed to inspire students to become more effective leaders on campus and in their lives. The STRiVE coaches (consisting of 13 UMBC students and staff) tailor a curriculum that encourages the 60 participants to make new friends, learn about themselves, reflect on values and ethics, work in teams to develop practical plans for making a difference on campus, and tackle both simulated and real leadership challenges.
