SELECTION IS WARMING UP!
Welcome
to UMBC Residential Life’s 2018 Housing Selection! This process will allow you
to choose a room to live in on campus next year. Our system is fully online and
will allow you to participate in Housing Selection using your smartphone,
tablet, or any computer. Just apply, connect, and select to cover your bases!
The first 500 students to apply will receive a Residential Life
hat – wow!
What’s the scoop for
Housing Selection 2018…
- Commuters may participate fully
in Selection! Must be part of a group for Residential Life housing –
come to the Residential Life office in Erickson Hall 184 with a current
residential group member to fill out a “commuter pass” form. May
apply as an individual or as part of a group for Walker Avenue Apartments
with 39+ credits. To apply for Walker simply fill out the on-line
application for Walker.
- As in previous years, no
3-person groups will be able to participate in Selection. If you
have a group of 3 you will need to find a 4th person
through the Roommate Searching feature or by attending the Roommate Mixer
hosted by the Resident Student Association (RSA). Students seeking
to obtain a triple room should stop in at the Residential Life office to
make the request at Erickson Hall 184.

- Remember – as was the case last
year 4-person groups do not receive priority for apartments – Housing
Selection is based on your academic credits only as of winter session and
your group credit average if you are selecting as a group.
- Apartment cut-off Res Life
Apartment Hillside, Terrace and West Hill: Many students hope to be
able to select an apartment. Remember that the typical apartment
cut-off is approximately a 50 credit group average. That cut-off can
vary depending on how many students are selecting apartments. So,
for example, a group of four students who are freshmen this year who each
obtained 15 credits as of winter session has a group credit average of 15.
This group should not plan on obtaining an apartment with that group
credit average.
- Apartment cut-off Walker Avenue
Apartments: Most students with 39+ credits who apply to Walker will
obtain an apartment through Housing Selection. Since each member of
your group must have 39+ credits to apply for Walker the competition for
apartments at that facility is somewhat less. So, for example, a
group of rising juniors with 39 credits each as of winter session has a
group credit average of 39. This group typically will be able to
obtain an apartment if they have applied for Walker Avenue apartments.

Trans AFTER College
Monday, Feb, 26, 5:30 - 7 p.m. in the Commons: Skylight Room
This event is for trans+ students, staff, and faculty and their cisgender
allies. At this panel event, invited guests will talk about their experiences of being trans and/or gender variant in their personal and professional lives post-college and will provide good practices for trans inclusion in our daily lives. This event is followed by the Trans In College event hosted last fall and is intended to complement the previous discussion. Note: You did not have to attend the fall event to attend this spring semester event. A reception will take place after the panel discussion and attendees are encouraged to continue the dialogue and network with each other.

One Million Acts of Good Campaign
UMBC was selected as one of 50 schools to participate in the One Million Acts of Good campaign in partnership with Ellen and Cheerios. UMBC Dining Services is being sent 300 MATTERboxes and supplies for a speed volunteering event set to occur on March 1st at True Grit’s from 12pm-2pm.
The boxes consist of snacks, cereal, stickers, YOU MATTER notes, and more, and will be packed and donated to local charities.
We are encouraging 24 students to sign up in shifts for this volunteering event here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f4fafab29a2fc1-onemillion
We will also be promoting shirt giveaways leading up to the event asking students to post on social media how they “do good” and tag #OneMillionActsOfGood and #UMBCgood

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PRACTICUM AVAILABLE THIS FALL TO
STUDENT EMPLOYEES!!
"PRAC102 - Building Skills for Career Success"Who is Eligible? ALL UMBC
Student Employees who are working a minimum of 8 hours per week on campus. It is open to all levels and majors.
Purpose of the Practicum: To help
student employees enhance and showcase their skills in the workplace at UMBC.
HOW can you help? Please spread the word to ALL
student employees about this opportunity and encourage them to sign up by
March 5, 2018. If you would like a team member to present the
PRAC to your
student staff, please let me know.
Background on PRAC 102As you know, making connections between campus jobs and both academic lives and future careers is really about seeing transferable skills. Through this practicum,
students will not only make those connections but learn how to articulate those connections to help them in resume writing and interviewing for jobs.
Students will also attend and reflect on workshops that help them develop skills they are using on the job now and in the future. This zero credit course will appear on their academic transcript.
