Education Professor of Practice Joan Shin has received the 2013 Ben Warren International House Trust Prize for her book Teaching Young Learners English (National Geographic Learning/Cengage Learning, 2013). Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Jonathan Greenert met with UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski to discuss the establishment of a Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) at UMBC and ways to work together on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives to promote STEM education and careers among America’s youth. The visit included a tour of campus, where Dr. William LaCourse, Dean of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences introduces the new Chemistry Discovery Center.

Professor Brian Cullum, Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has been selected as a Fellow of SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics. SPIE Fellows are honored for their technical achievements and for their service to the general optics community and to SPIE in particular. As the head of the Center for Translational Nanobioscience, Cullum focuses on developing nanotechnology for biomedical and defense-related applications.

UMBC Enters Partnership with U.S. Army Research Lab

UMBC signed an Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the U.S. Army Research Lab (ARL), the Army’s premier laboratory for basic and applied research and analysis. The agreement provides a framework for collaborations between UMBC faculty and students and ARL researchers. The Agreement was signed by ARL Director Thomas Russell and UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski.
