Lorraine Remer recognized as Highly Cited Researcher

Dr. Lorraine Remer, a Research Professor in Physics working at the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has been named among the world’s top scientists, according to the recently launched Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researchers list, "The Most Influential Scientific Minds 2014." According to Thomson Reuters, Highly Cited Researchers is a compilation of influential names in science that spotlights some of the “standout researchers of the last decade.” Deriving from InCites Essential Science Indicators, a subset of the Web of Science, Highly Cited Researchers presents more than 3,000 authors in 21 main fields of science and the social sciences. These researchers earned the distinction by writing the greatest numbers of reports officially designated by Essential Science Indicators as Highly Cited Papers—ranking among the top 1% most cited for their subject field and year of publication—between 2002 and 2012.

UMBC co-hosts NIH Regional Grants Conference
June 27, 2014
NIH held its 2014 Regional Seminar on Program Funding and Grants Administration on June 25-27, 2014 in Baltimore, Maryland at the Inner Harbor. In partnership with NIH, UMBC and Towson University co-hosted the event. UMBC’s Office of the Vice President for Research was represented by Dean Drake, Sarah Parton, Deborah Waters, Tim Sparklin, Karen Barnes, and Tina Stanger. NIH staffed the event with at least 35 NIH and HHS staff of varying specialties. Over 800 participants from across the nation and from a variety of research institutes were in attendance.

University of Idaho President Chuck Staben visited the UMBC campus to meet with UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski and Vice President for Research Karl Steiner to learn more about UMBC’s educational programs and explore opportunities for scientific collaborations. The visit included a tour of several laboratories on campus, including cyber security, biochemistry, the new Performing Arts and Humanities building and the HHMI facility.

Four UMBC Students awarded Fulbright Scholarship

Four UMBC students who were awarded 2014 Fulbright grants. Two earned English teaching assistantships for Indonesia: Joshua Gehret ’14, English and ancient studies, and Lauren Raubaugh ’11, English and history, and ’13, M.A., TESOL. Two others won Fulbright research grants: Ke “Coco” Tang ’14, political science, history and visual arts, and Donovan ’11, geography and environmental systems, and ’14 M.S., geography and environmental systems.

Virginia State University Delegation visits UMBC

A delegation led by Omar Faison, Director of Sponsored Programs at Virginia State University (VSU) visited UMBC to explore opportunities for collaborative research. The visit was hosted by Karl V. Steiner, Vice President for Research and included meetings with Dr. Julia Ross, incoming Dean for the College of Engineering and Information Technologies (COEIT) and numerous faculty members. The VSU delegation included Dr. Daniel Roberts, Executive Director Global and Special Initiatives, Dr. Jinmyun Jo, Department of Computer Engineering and Dr. Sidney McNairy, former Director, Capacity Building Branch at NIH-NIGMS.

A senior delegation of Maryland's MedStar Health Research Institute visited UMBC to discuss opportunities for research collaborations. Led by MedStar HRI President Neil Weissman, the delegation also included Katie Carlin, Director of Research Development, Nawar Shara, Director of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics and Angela Thomas, Executive Director of Health Services Research Administration.
