A message from President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous:
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
UMBC is committed to maintaining a safe and caring learning environment for all--one that embraces freedom of thought, expression, and speech. At the same time, our community views racist and discriminatory language, imagery, and actions as deeply harmful and counter to our values.
Unfortunately, over the weekend, we received reports of racist language and imagery found in the Information Technology and Engineering Building. Because property was damaged and specific groups of people were targeted, the UMBC Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime. We encourage anyone with information that may be helpful in the investigation to contact Paul Dillon, Deputy Chief of Police, at 410-707-6012 or pdillon@umbc.edu.
We would like to thank members of the community for reporting this incident to campus authorities. We are reminded that all of us have a responsibility to protect and support each other. We encourage anyone who witnesses or is the victim of a hate/bias incident, harassment, or a hate crime to report the matter to the UMBC Police Department, Office of Student Life, Office of Human Resources, or Office of Human Relations.
Students seeking support in light of this incident can access campus resources, including the following:
