On Friday April 22nd from 2-3:30 PM in the Women’s Center lounge, our guest facilitator will be Dr. Hua Lu who will present on “It Is Never Too Early (or Too Late) to Think About Your Career Options.” Dr. Lu will share with the group her career development over the years, how she prepared for jobs, and how she chose her paths at some crossroads. She will also discuss how she decides what to focus on in her research, why she is interested in integrating outreach with her research program, and some of the outreach activities. She will then open the discussion for students to share with each other their career aspirations and how to achieve career goals.
Dr. Hua Lu joined the Department of Biological Sciences at UMBC as an assistant professor in 2006 and she was promoted to be a full professor in 2018. Dr. Lu earned a Ph.D. in Biology from Texas A&M University in 1999 and received a postdoc training at the University of Chicago from 2000-2006. Her research, in the Hua Lu lab, focuses on plant-pathogen interactions, using molecular, genetics, and bioinformatics approaches. In addition to her research and regular teaching duties, Dr. Lu has done extensive outreach activities to provide research training opportunities to undergraduate and high school students.

This event is part of the Women's Center's Women + Gender Minorities in STEM Discussion Series. This series is dedicated to creating space for women and gender minorities in STEM within our Women’s Center community. More discussion topics will take place throughout Spring 2022. Guest speakers are staff and faculty in STEM fields at UMBC.
Due to the updated COVID-19 policy, our space will have a limited number of 15 people in our lounge. Try to arrive early or on time! Unfortunately, we will have to turn people away once it reaches 15 people. We will also require our members to wear a mask while in the Women’s Center.

Queer and Trans Love is a radical act that reimagines new realities and possibilites. Love is at the center of belonging and community. Explore with us what queering love, queer and trans family-building, love as an act of social justice, and radical self-love means for our panelists. Bring all of your questions to LGBTQIA+ identifying staff, faculty, and alumni who can share what it means to be queer and/or trans and experience love and what relationships look and feel like for us.

QTeaPOC Coffee Hour! Tuesday October 19th from 12-1:30pm: Join i3b, QTPOC, and the Retriever Integrated Health, Counseling Center for a Queer and Trans People of Color student coffee hang out! This is an informal gathering for discussion and community building in which we also hope to hear from QTPOC students on their needs and hopes for the coming academic year. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided. This is an event that centers QTPOC students.
