Prof. Bennett pub. article on affirmative action in colleges
Examining affirm. action in context of 2003 SCOTUS ruling
This week, Prof. Pamela R. Bennett co-authored an article published in the Journal of Law and Social Policy (JLSP). The article, "How Affirmative Action Context Shapes Collegiate Outcomes at America's Selective Colleges and Universities," examines how affirmative action context relates to academic outcomes in US universities. In the article, the authors compare outcomes before and after the US Supreme Court's 2003 Grutter decision, in which the Supreme Court ruled that affirmative action is constitutional, but should implemented via holistic evaluation of applicants.
This research is particularly relevant in light of the recent federal court
decision finding that Harvard University did not discriminate against Asian American applicants during the admissions process.

here.Today in The Baltimore Sun, Ph.D. student Laura Mateczun and Prof. Emeritus Donald Norris published an op-ed on the need for local governments to prioritize cybersecurity.
The piece highlights Baltimore's own recent problems with cybersecurity, including the Spring 2019 attack that is expected to cost the City $18 million.
Mateczun and Norris are members of a team of UMBC researchers that conducted the first ever nationwide survey of cybersecurity elements in local governments.

Public Policy doctoral student Jeevan Lohani has been named an Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) 2019 Equity & Inclusion Fellowship Winner!
The Fellowship supports travel/participation of students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds to this year's Fall Research conference in Denver.
In addition to his doctoral work, Jeevan also works as a Graduate Research Assistant for the Maryland Institute of Policy Analysis and Research (MIPAR).

Public Policy Professor Emeritus George La Noue recently published a new book, Silenced Stages, about academic freedom and the impacts of limiting campus discourse for policy debates.

"Disinvitations, protests, and speech codes make headlines, but just as important is the chilling of campus discourse to the point some views and arguments are not brought forward at all. What is left out of campus debates may be more worrisome than the overt suppression of speech.
These are issues George R. La Noue takes up in his just-released book, Silenced Stages: The Loss of Academic Freedom and Campus Policy Debates. Professor La Noue researched nearly 100 campuses and found that, on far too many campuses, some ideas are deemed too unorthodox for open discussion and some speakers are judged too controversial to be invited. This limiting of campus discourse prevents students from fully testing their deepest convictions and learning from arguments across the spectrum of ideas.
