Hey there!

Time is flying by, isn’t it? Believe it or not, our third GBM is coming up! GBM #3 will be held this Friday, October 8th at 3:00PM.

This week, we’ll be discussing graduate school! Our talking points will include:

• the variety of degrees that a Psychology student can pursue,
• the timeline for applying to graduate school,
• the steps you may need to take in preparation,
• some resources right at UMBC that may be of help to you in the process,
• ... and more!

Whether you are considering applying to graduate school, deciding which path will be best for you, or simply looking to explore your options; this meeting will be perfect for you! We know many of you were interested in learning about graduate school, so we hope you’ll come prepared with questions and we will be happy to answer them.

The meeting will once again be held via Webex, and I will send out a link to the room on Friday morning. In the meantime, feel free to email us with any questions, comments, or suggestions!

Hey Psi Chi!

I’m here to extend to you an invitation to an exciting, psychology-related event from the Students of Applied Behavior Analysis Society (SABAS), coming up this week! Here is a snippet of information from our very own Courtney Arrington - treasurer of Psi Chi UMBC and Vice President of SABAS:

SABAS was founded in 2020 by two research assistants (Ann Jeanette Santos and Meghan Ceribo) and Dr. Mirela Cengher, who is an assistant professor in the Psychology Department. SABAS is a community of UMBC students who have developed an interest and passion for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Through this society, we hope to develop professional connections and skills within our field, build peer relationships, and engage in conversations about ABA.

SABAS is holding an event this Friday (October 1st) from 3pm-5pm, via WebEx, with a guest speaker, Dr. Arrington. 

Dr. Arrington will be giving two talks: one on the trauma-informed mental health worker and the human trafficking survivor, and the other on systematic approaches to case conceptualization and clinical work. As these topics relate to clinical psychological work, they relate to Psi Chi’s mission and will likely be of interest to a number of Psi Chi students.

In case you missed my last email, many of you have expressed interest in events that would allow you to get to know your fellow Psi Chi members. That’s going to be the focus of GBM #2! We’ll start by throwing out some fun game ideas (including an online version of the popular card game, We’re Not Really Strangers), and depending on what you all are interested in most, we’ll get started with the ice-breaking!

As we’ve said before, we want to get as many of our members involved and participating this semester as possible. We’d really like to get to know you all and cultivate a Psi Chi family - so if that’s something you would also enjoy, this meeting will be the perfect opportunity to get started. (Also… it’ll just be lots of fun.) Join us, bring your friends, and make some new ones!

Hi Psi Chi!

Firstly, thank you to everyone who responded to our various surveys last week! Your responses will be really helpful for us when planning the rest of the semester.

Secondly, I wanted to let you know that our second GBM is coming up this Friday, September 24th at 3:00PM! Many of your responses to the interest survey suggested that we host some games or social events that would help us all get to know each other. We love that idea as well, so that will be the focus of GBM #2! This meeting will be a great opportunity to meet and form connections with your fellow Psi Chi members, and to have some fun while doing it. Come join us: bring your friends, and maybe make some new ones!

GBM #2 will be virtual via Webex, and I will send out more information on how to attend closer to the meeting date. Feel free to email any of the Psi Chi officers (whose contact information can be found on our myUMBC page) with any questions, or with suggestions for specific (and virtual) games you’d like to see!

Just wanted to remind you that TODAY, September 17th is the deadline to fill out the two forms I sent you earlier in the week! My email/myUMBC post from last week has all the details, but just to refresh your memory:

Member Availability Form

This form will be used to determine when most of our members have free time, so that we can choose alternative dates for future meetings and events in case Fridays at 3 isn’t ideal for everyone. You can access the availability form here.

Member Interest Form

This form will be used to gather your suggestions and ideas about the sorts of subjects you are interested in learning about, as well as the types of activities or events you’d like us to hold this semester. This is your chance to personalize your Psi Chi experience; so don’t hesitate to share your thoughts with us! You can access the interest form here.

Happy Sunday! First, a quick 'thank you' to those of you who attended our first GBM. It was a small but mighty group, and we really appreciate that you spent your time with us.

We really hope to see more of you at events and meetings in the future! With that said, we know that the sudden change in UMBC’s free hour might mean that not everyone is available on Fridays at 3pm. So, we’d love it if you could fill out this availability form so we can get a better idea of when you all have free time. Based on this form, we may plan our future events and/or alternative GBM’s on better dates and times that will accommodate more members! We ask that you fill out the form byFriday, September 17th so that we can plan accordingly. Your input is greatly appreciated!

Involvement Fest

Psi Chi will be participating in Involvement Festtomorrow (Thursday, September 9th) from 12-2 PM, on Erickson Field. We’ll be handing out fliers, answering questions about the semester ahead, and just hanging out. We’d love to see you there, new and old members alike. Come say hi!

If you can’t visit us in person, we’ll also be participating in the Virtual Involvement Festtomorrow evening (September 9th) from 6-8 PM. That meeting will be in our Webex room, which can be found on theInvolvement Fest website, or on our myUMBC page. I’ll also send out the Webex link tomorrow. Come get to know Psi Chi ahead of our first meeting! Speaking of which...

First GBM

Our first GBM will be held this Friday, September 10th at 3PM, via Webex. In our GBM, we’ll go into more detail about our plans for the semester, how to maintain active membership, introducing ourselves, and getting to know you! You must attend at least 3 meetings/events this semester to be considered an active member, so it’ll be an easy way to get that first one under your belt.

Involvement Opportunity

Lastly, I have another great opportunity for our undergraduate Psychology students! If you are interested in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a UMBC student-led organization called Students of Applied Behavior Analysis Society (SABAS) is looking for help. They are currently looking to fill positions for a Director of Public Relationsand a Graphic Designer. The recruitment flyers for these positions are attached to this email, and interested students can email SABAS’s president, Ann Jeanette Santos (xu10210@umbc.edu) to set up an interview. If you aren’t interested in a position but still want to learn about SABAS as a general body member, their first meeting will be Friday, September 17th during free hour.
