The Service Awards ceremony is UMBC's annual tradition of acknowledging staff who have given their time, energy, and talents to UMBC and the State of Maryland. Staff members with service anniversaries starting at five years and in increments of five years thereafter are honored for their contributions in making UMBC a leading public university and a great place to work. We invite you to connect, shout out, and support your family and friends in celebration of their important milestones at UMBC.

In celebration of our dedicated UMBC faculty and staff, we are pleased to offer up to four complimentary tickets for each staff member for the UMBC men's and women's basketball games on November 8, 11, and 14 at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena! 

To claim this offer, UMBC faculty and staff members must present their employee ID card at the CEI box office or use the links below to reserve online. Additional tickets for accompanying guests must be purchased. This offer does not apply to season tickets or group tickets. We appreciate the hard work of our UMBC faculty and staff, and we invite you to join us in supporting our Retrievers. Enjoy the games!

Open Enrollment ends on Thursday, Nov. 9, 5 p.m.
We are in the final week of the State's Open Enrollment period, which will end on Thursday, November 9 at 5 p.m. The State will not allow any exceptions or extensions to the Open Enrollment deadline. 

(Please note: the State will be CLOSED on Friday, November 10 in observance of Veterans Day.) 

Thank you to everyone who attended our information sessions and logged in to the SPS Workday system to review and/or make changes in their Open Enrollment event. 

Below are a few reminders for employees who may still need to take action in their Open Enrollment event for their 2024 health benefits:
  • Enrollment or changes can be made in the Open Enrollment event in the employee's SPS Workday account.
  • SPS Workday passwords can be reset by clicking the "Forgot Password" link under the Workday login prompt.
  • Employees who wish to make elections for a Healthcare or Dependent Daycare Flexible Spending Account for 2024 must enroll or re-enroll via their Open Enrollment event in their Workday account by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 9. 
  • Employees enrolling new dependents, including domestic partners, must upload the required documentation by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 9. 

Employees who are not enrolling in a Flexible Spending Account or making any other health benefit changes do not need to take action in their Open Enrollment event. All other health benefits (medical, prescription, dental, life insurance, and AD&D) will automatically rollover to the 2024 calendar year, even if the employee takes no action in their Open Enrollment event.

UMBC's annual staff awards are an important way of recognizing the work being done every day by our dedicated exempt and non-exempt staff. That's why we have extended the deadline for nominating colleagues for the following prestigious awards to this Friday, November 3:
  • University System of Maryland Board of Regents' Staff Awards: recognizing demonstrated excellence in one of five specific areas of work
  • UMBC Presidential Distinguished Staff Awards: recognizing exceptional performance, leadership, and/or service
  • Jakubik Family Endowment Staff Award for Exempt or Non-Exempt Staff: recognizing contributions toward the success of UMBC students
  • Karen L. Wensch Endowment Award for Outstanding Non-Exempt Staff: recognizing excellence across a variety of areas of service
  • Teresa Lupinek Endowment Award for Exempt or Non-Exempt Staff: recognizing staff whose work embodies many of the outstanding qualities for which Lupinek and her work were known

Welcome to UMBC's 2023 Maryland Charity Campaign (MCC). Each year, faculty and staff join their colleagues across the state to support local nonprofits that serve those in need in our communities.


Last year, the state raised almost $2,000,000 to support local nonprofits. At UMBC, more than 700 faculty and staff donated over $240,000. Your generosity allowed UMBC to once more be one of the top contributing organizations across all state agencies and University System of Maryland campuses. 


You can participate in the campaign by giving online. Make your donation using Maryland's secure online portal through payroll deduction or credit card. The portal also provides instructions on how to designate a nonprofit to receive your donation. If you would like, you can also donate to the UMBC Foundation through the MCC portal, to support our students in need.


In the coming weeks, you will hear from your department's MCC coordinator. They will provide more information about how to get involved and what inspires them to give. These colleagues are an essential part of making this campaign a success each year.

Dear Colleagues,

Although I have been at UMBC for only a relatively short time, I have already been thoroughly impressed by the talent and dedication that surrounds me. Every day, I see or hear about wonderful work being done by our staff, so many of whom go above and beyond to make UMBC a welcoming, meaningful home for our students.

That is why I am writing to encourage you to nominate a colleague for a staff award this year by the deadline of October 31. Any staff or faculty member can make a nomination, so please take a moment and think about a deserving staff member you might nominate for one of these awards:

  • UMBC Presidential Distinguished Staff Awards
  • University System of Maryland Board of Regents' Staff Awards
  • Jakubik Family Endowment Staff Award for Exempt or Non-Exempt Staff

Dear Colleagues, 

Open Enrollment for State Health Benefits begins today, October 16, and will be open through 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 9. Employees who are not making any health benefit changes do not need to take action. However, if you wish to continue a healthcare and/or dependent daycare flexible spending account (FSA), you must re-enroll in your Open Enrollment event. 

During Open Enrollment, employees can enroll in and/or make changes to their health benefits to become effective on January 1, 2024. The State of Maryland will send out important emails via the SPS Workday system (stateofmaryland@myworkday.com) regarding Open Enrollment. 

Open Enrollment will continue to be online in the SPS Workday system. For more information on the SPS Workday system, employees should visit the HR website for detailed instructions on accessing their Workday account. Discover incentives and find out what's new for the State's 2024 Wellness Program.

We are pleased to announce that all existing plans and vendors will remain in place for 2024. However, the State has passed along rate changes that will impact the medical, prescription, and dental plans in 2024. CareFirst, United Healthcare, and Kaiser medical plan rates will increase approximately 9.5 percent. CVS Caremark Prescription plan rates will increase 9 percent. Dental plan rates will increase 9.5 percent. The State MetLife term life insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverages will experience no rate increases in 2024. Open Enrollment rates and materials are posted on the HR Open Enrollment website. 

Also new for 2024: Employees can now enroll eligible Domestic Partners and their dependents during Open Enrollment. The effective date of coverage will be January 1, 2024. Employees must enroll and submit documentation for their Domestic Partners and their dependents during Open Enrollment. More information about the documentation required will soon be available on the HR Open Enrollment website. 

The Human Resources Benefits team will host a live, virtual Open Enrollment Information Session via Webex on October 18 at 10 a.m. Employees who are unable to attend the live session will be able to view a recording that will be posted on the Virtual Resources page on or around October 27.
