Just a reminder, please RSVP for the 2024 Convocation ceremony, which will be held Tuesday, August 27 at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. We look forward to welcoming our incoming students and introducing them to UMBC’s traditions. We hope you will march in the procession, where some of our new students will see academic regalia for the first time.
Please join us for a Welcome Reception for Provost Manfred H. M. van Dulmen, hosted by President Sheares Ashby at 2:30 p.m. Those planning to march in the procession should arrive no later than 3 p.m. The ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Faculty and staff who wish to march in the procession (or simply attend Convocation) should

order their regalia by
this Friday, August 2 to avoid additional shipping fees. Those who wish to volunteer as event staff can
register here.

We are pleased to invite you to participate in our 2024 Convocation ceremony on Tuesday, August 27, at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. We look forward to welcoming our incoming students to a new academic year and introducing them to UMBC’s traditions. We hope you will march in the procession, where some of our new students will see academic regalia for the first time.

University System of Maryland Shared Governance Survey
Share your thoughts by June 21
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Council of University System Staff (CUSS) and the Council of University System Faculty (CUSF), we are seeking your participation in a brief survey to gauge your awareness of and the strengths and growth opportunities for shared governance efforts on your campus and within the University System of Maryland. When functioning properly, shared governance, for those who are unaware, is a system where committee(s) of faculty, staff, and students advise campus/system leadership on policies/procedures/issues, giving a voice to all three groups.
This survey is anonymous (the survey platform will not collect any identifying information from respondents, including IP and email addresses) and should take no more than five minutes to complete. The responses of this survey will be analyzed, aggregated, and shared with the leadership both on your campus and at the University System of Maryland.

Celebrating achievement across our UMBC community

As the semester concludes, I am delighted to share Inquiring Minds: 2024 Research and Creative Achievement. In this annual report, we are presenting a cross section of some of the key areas of achievement across our UMBC community.
Inquiring Minds showcases how we continue to build our research culture, highlighting just a small selection of our community’s recent research and creative achievement initiatives.
The annual report is now available to view in an
interactive digital format. A limited number of print copies of the annual report will be available through the Office of Research and Creative Achievement. Fiscal Year 2025 Salary Guidelines
Changes will be effective July 1
Dear Colleagues,
We are writing to share with you the Fiscal Year 2025 salary guidelines, aligned with those received from the University System of Maryland for faculty and staff in Regular and Contingent II positions, together with UMBC's plan for implementing those guidelines.
Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA)
All Regular faculty and staff, Contingent II staff, and graduate assistants will receive a 3 percent COLA increase, effective July 1, 2024. Eligible employees must have been on the university payroll since June 30, 2024, to be eligible for the COLA.
Merit Increases
A 2.5 percent merit pool, effective July 1, 2024, will be distributed to each division and applies to Regular faculty and staff and Contingent II staff. Merit increases will be based on a PMP overall rating of "effective" or better for the rating period of April 1, 2023, through March 31, 2024 (if a PMP was not submitted for an eligible employee for that period, the overall rating will be considered "effective").
Regular nonexempt staff must have completed original and/or promotional probation by June 30, 2024, to be eligible for the merit increase. Nonexempt staff on original and/or promotional probation will receive a 2.5 percent increase upon their successful completion of the probationary period.
Regular exempt staff must have been in an eligible position prior to January 15, 2024, to be considered for a merit increase.
Contingent II staff must have been in an eligible position prior to January 1, 2024, (nonexempt staff) or January 15, 2024, (exempt staff) to be considered for a merit increase.
Regular faculty must have accepted an offer prior to January 15, 2024, to be eligible for a merit increase.
Adjunct Increases
Adjunct faculty, who are employed on a course-by-course basis will receive a 3 percent increase over their Academic Year 2023 – 2024 per course payment rates upon contract renewal. The college standard rates will be increased 3 percent as well.

Join a Leadership Development Cohort
For new and existing managers to gain skills
Dear Colleagues,
As UMBC continues to grow as a leader in the higher education space, it is critical that we retain our best people. Effective leadership is key to this imperative. The Human Resources and Strategic Talent Management department is excited to announce the launch of our LEAP Leadership Development Academy this August 2024!
LEAP Academy is a five-month leadership development cohort program for new people managers and/or existing supervisors who need a tune-up on today’s critical managerial competencies to better support their team. The program runs from August to December and features in-person instructional sessions, virtual team coaching sessions, and an All-Access Pass to FranklinCovey’s Impact Portal, where participants can access course content and additional supervisory resources.
Please review the full overview and choose the cohort that works best for your schedule. Each cohort is run separately as its own intact group; no switching is permitted.
The LEAP nomination process is both a self-selected process and supervisor/leader-nominated program. Individuals who self-select must obtain supervisor support to attend. Full participation is required. Leaders may nominate their people, but nominees must apply themselves.
LEAP is only one of the leadership cohort programs that we will be bringing to campus. Stay tuned for more information that details our full plan!

Additional Sessions on Navigating Change Available
Learn successful change strategies
Dear Colleagues,
As we continue to evolve as an institution, knowing how to make sense of and effectively navigate change is a critical competency that we must master. People are at the heart of change and are often the lynchpin that leads to change success or failure. UMBC is grateful for the continued partnership with FranklinCovey in rolling out their signature change program, Change: How to Turn Uncertainty Into Opportunity.
This spring we are continuing to offer a variety of sessions for different populations to engage in this learning. Each is focused on the human side of change, providing the practical skills and common language to navigate and/or lead change. Participants will learn distinct strategies to help understand and manage reactions, keys to effectively navigate change both functionally and emotionally, and a model that makes the change process predictable, positive, and possible.
