Other March 19th Event Needs:

  • Behavior Savvy Volunteers or Trainer

  • Volunteer Photographer (no prof. experience needed)

  • Field Activities (for kids and families OR dogs)

Event includes free vet exams, microchips, vaccines, deworming, flea/tick prevention, and free pet care gift packages; spay/neuter vouchers and pet care information; pet tags; dog behavior/enrichment activities; and other fun activities for families and pets.

Volunteers will work with a team to run one of these stations, or help with activities such as guiding guests, filling out paperwork, running supplies, animal handling, etc.

Medical Veterinary Technician Volunteer Position: 

Requirements: 
  • Must complete a volunteer application and attend a volunteer orientation/open house (https://www.barcs.org/volunteer-information/) 
  • Must commit to one 3-4hr shift per week for the majority of the semester Shifts are 8 or 9 AM to 12 PM and 3:30-6:30 PM every day (weekdays and weekends) 
  • Must be comfortable handling dogs and cats with a variety of temperaments. 
  • Must have strong communication skills and be willing to listen to and follow directions from the veterinarians and veterinary technicians you are working with. 
  • Previous experience as a veterinary technician is encouraged but is not required! 
  • Position is limited to a maximum of 7 volunteers per semester. 
Description of Position: 
  • The majority of this volunteer position will consist of helping our veterinary technicians complete twice daily medical treatment rounds. BARCS is often home to over a hundred animals at a time, and many of these animals require some form of medical care. Typical treatments you may be asked to do include: administration or oral, otic, and ophthalmic medications, ear cleanings, basic wound care and surgical site evaluations, etc. 
  • You may also be asked to help our veterinary team in other ways, such as restraining animals for exams, helping to administer vaccines, assisting with blood draws, setting animals up in cages/kennels, entering medical information in the computer, etc.

This would be a beneficial opportunity that would allow those participating to get veterinary experience to improve vet school applications.

We've recently been having trouble finding volunteers to help with AM and PM dog and cat meds at BARCS. We currently only have a few people trained to do this job and it's a HUGE help for our vet techs when someone is able to help with meds.

I'm hoping that maybe this is something we can recruit UMBC students (especially pre-vet students) to help us with. I'm hopeful that this would be a mutually beneficial thing, especially for any pre-vet students as it would allow them to get veterinary experience to improve their vet school applications.

We've had a couple of UMBC students start off as volunteer techs and move into contract/FT tech positions and then move on to veterinary school! This year we had two amazing UMBC students (Cierra McKoy and Matt Brown) BOTH get into vet school!
