Georgetown Law's 19th Annual Affinity Outreach Day: Faces of the Future Saturday, November 1, 2025 Each year, Georgetown Law's Black Law Students Association (BLSA) and partnering student organizations invite prospective applicants to visit the Law Center to learn more about the experience of Georgetown Law students, receive important information about the law school application process, and learn more about Georgetown's community. 

The event is free to attend, and there will be an option to attend the event virtually.

UMBC will begin offering a new cooperative program in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Law (PPEL) starting Spring 2026!

The gateway course, PPEL 250, will be offered for the first time this spring.

This course introduces students to interdisciplinary approaches to understanding institutions, decision-making, and justice, making it a great fit for those interested in public policy, law, or social analysis.

Students majoring in Political Science or Economics will find it especially easy to add the PPEL Certificate, as several courses from those majors also count toward the certificate requirements.

Interested in access to education, poverty, and mass incarceration?

The Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP) invites UMBC students* and alumni to learn about opportunities to support individuals incarcerated in Maryland pursuing a college education at Goucher College.

  • GPEP offers Goucher College courses and college preparatory courses on-site at the prisons as well as all necessary resources for student success, including books, calculators, academic materials, and access to skilled tutors and in-person office hours with professors and academic advisors. 
  • Through this work, GPEP is also part of the public conversation about access to education, poverty, and mass incarceration.
Volunteer Opportunities include:
  • Tutors: help with critical reading and writing, math, art, Spanish, science, and more.
  • Volunteer research assistants: work one-on-one with professors to bridge the gap between resources available in the library on the main campus and students in the prisons.
  • Provide administrative support in GPEP's office on Goucher College’s Towson campus. This can include organizing materials for a class, preparing letters for mailing, coordinating data in an Excel file, and more.
  • Help former students who have come home with their college application process.

Students of all majors are invited to volunteer for the UMBC Advanced Planning Clinic, co-sponsored by UMBC Pre-Law Advising, the Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program, and the Erickson School of Aging Studies, in partnership with Maryland Legal Aid and the Baltimore County Bar Association.  

UMBC student volunteers will be paired with volunteer attorneys to assist local seniors in completing Advance Directive forms.

An advance directive allows a person to choose who will make health care decisions on their behalf if they are ever unable to do so

  • Gain hands-on experience working alongside attorneys
  • Interact directly with clients
  • Learn more about the importance of advance planning in elder law
  • No prior legal knowledge is required - training and support will be provided!

UMBC Advanced Planning Clinic
Date:  Monday, October 6, 2025
Time:  There are two volunteer shifts: (1) 2:30 PM -5:00 PM and (2) 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM.   
Location: UMBC’s Erickson School of Aging Studies (at the Research Park), 5523 Research Park Drive; Suite 230

To maximize the overall number of student participants, students may volunteer for one shift only.  Space is limited so sign up as soon as possible!
