Course Title: LAW 705: Civil Rights Planning

Instructor: Professor Harold McDougall

Course Description: This course is an introduction to the practical, procedural, and substantive planning engaged in by lawyers helping to develop remedies for violations of the rights of minorities and women. These remedies include litigation, legislative and regulatory advocacy, demonstrations, and public information campaigns. We also look at citizen action and access to local government. Traditional "trouble spots" include racial profiling, hate crimes, discrimination against consumers, employment discrimination, voting rights, housing discrimination and discrimination in public education, and mental health law and policy.

During this class, UMBC students will have the opportunity to observe law student presentations and ask questions via chat.

  • Model United Nations (MUN) is an intellectual sport which brings together thousands of students in an attempt to simulate the activities of actual UN organs/agencies while at conferences. 
  • At the NY conference, you will meet thousands of other students from across the nation and the world (some of these people become lifelong friends), and become exceptionally skilled at public speaking, internationally oriented research, diplomacy, and problem solving.

Pre-Law Students:

A proposed new student organization focused on public interest law, community advocacy, and social justice initiatives is currently in development!

This organization will be applying for New Organization Recognition and, during this transitional period, will collaborate with The Pre-Law Society.

Check out the proposed mission statement and goals below:

  • The Justice Initiative (TJI) at UMBC is a student-led organization committed to empowering students and the greater Baltimore community through legal education, professional development, and meaningful community service. 
  • TJI advocates for informed action and accessible justice by connecting students with nonprofit organizations and legal professionals in the public service sector, providing hands-on opportunities for engagement, learning, and impact.

TJI is currently offering E-Board applications, for the roles of Legal Coordinator, Event Coordinator, Treasurer, and Marketing Manager, and seeking general membership from UMBC students.
