United Against Inequities in Disease (UAID) is a 501(c)3 national nonprofit organization that empowers students to eliminate health inequities locally. 

 

Members of UAID benefit from a number of opportunities including:

  • Training in health equity with an opportunity to earn a certificate
  • Training in designing, executing, and evaluating community health projects
  • Real-world experience working to reduce local health inequities
  • Leadership opportunities and development of professional skills required by most health professions programs (e.g., AAMC core competencies)
  • Experience writing research papers, creating research posters, and presenting research projects
  • Monthly mentorship opportunities with experts in public health
  • Fulfillment of academic credit, practicum, or capstone requirements

University of Maryland Department of Dermatology Gap Year Intern Program

 

During your gap year (at least 2 years preferred) between undergraduate and professional school, you will join the high functioning clinical team in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine as a gap year intern/medical assistant and crucial team member. During this year you will have opportunities to obtain mentorship and letters of support from physicians and also as a gap year clinical medical assistant will work alongside top physicians. Will have opportunity to work with multiple physicians including Dr. Shawn Kwatra, Joseph W. Burnett Endowed Professor and Chairman of Dermatology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. As a gap year program intern/participant you will learn about general, surgical, and medical dermatology, obtained patient care skills applicable to any specialty, received mentorship, gain clinical experience that will maximize your chances of getting into medical school or other professional programs. The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising welcomes all students interested in exploring allied health professions to attend our 4rd Annual Allied Health Symposium!

In this hybrid event, students will hear from representatives from a variety of professional allied health programs about their respective health fields as well as the varied admissions processes.This event is for students who are exploring a variety of allied health professions, as well as those who have already committed to a pathway.

The first hour will be a panel presentation, followed by time for students to meet with panelist from each allied health program. 

Representatives will join us from the following schools:
  • University of Maryland School of Nursing
  • University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
  • Notre Dame of Maryland University (Occupational Therapy) 
  • Towson University (Physician Assistant)
  • University of Maryland Baltimore (Physical Therapy)
  • Case Western Reserve University (Anesthesiologist Assistant)

We hope you will join us in-person in the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building room 116B or virtually via webex! Lunch will be provided for those that can join us on campus!

Research participants are needed for a short 5 to 10 minute anonymous survey on food access at UMBC. 

After completion of the survey, participants can enter a raffle to win $25 in UMBC bookstore credits. Results will be shared with UMBC administration and Retriever Essentials to improve resources on campus.
