The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage. SHPEP, formerly known as the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), expanded in 2016 to include a broader array of health professions.

Mandatory Freshmen Advising Meeting

Freshmen Mandatory PreHealth Advising meeting

MANDATORY attendance is required at this group advising meeting for any current UMBC freshman or freshman-transfer student who is interested in attending medical, dental, optometry, podiatry, or veterinary school after graduating from UMBC.

From a pre-health advising perspective, you should attend the Freshmen Mandatory Advising Meeting if:

This is your first or second semester in college.
or
You are currently enrolled in CHEM 101 or CHEM 102 or BIOL 141 or BIOL 142.

This meeting will address pre-professional specific advising issues for freshmen such as professional school prerequisite courses, grades, standardized exams, gaining research, clinical, and leadership experience. Between now and the meeting, freshmen should acquire a working knowledge of the information on the office’s website. All freshmen students interested in attending medical, dental, optometry, podiatry, or veterinary school after they graduate from UMBC, are required to attend.

Pre-professional students have TWO advisors–an Assigned Academic/Declared Major Advisor and a supplemental, pre-health advisor. Please read about the differences between your TWO advisors here. It is strongly suggested that each student meet with their Assigned Academic/Declared Major Advisor prior to attending the pre-health group advising session. Only your Assigned Academic Advisor in your declared major can lift your registration block.

This session will be conducted two times. The same content will be covered in both sessions. There is no need to RSVP. Please save one of these dates on your calendar.

The Gateways to the Laboratory Program is for:

·         Freshman and sophomores (at time of application) only;

·         Underrepresented minority students or have a disability;

·         US Citizens/Permanent Residents;

·         Students who wish to pursue the combined MD-PhD degrees after college (this is not well suited for those who wish to pursue MD only).

The application deadline for this and most other summer programs is February 1.

Gateways to the Laboratory Summer Program in New York City for Pre-MD/PhD Students.

• Ideal for students who wish to pursue the combined MD-PhD degree (this program is run by the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program).
• 10 weeks of independent research at either Weill Cornell Medical College, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or The Rockefeller University (all in NYC).
• Present & participate in weekly journal clubs
• Scrub into surgeries at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
• Give an oral, written and poster presentation of your research in front of your family (who are flown in for the event), friends and colleagues.
• Receive on going mentorship by your "Big Sib" (a current MD-PhD student), as well as weekly meetings with the Program's leadership.
• Receive a stipend of $4,300 (minus the cost of housing).
• Gateways alumni are accepted and matriculate in the top MD-PhD Programs in the country!

An annual event sponsored by the Baltimore City Medical Society.

The Baltimore City Medical Society will again feature representatives from several local medical schools to answer questions and describe their side of the process.  

And we have added a segment on taking the MCATs as well as one on writing your essay.
