When You Picture a Scientist, Who Do You See?- March 24, 3pm
A conversation on advancing diversity and inclusion in STEM
Roco Films Educational, in partnership with ProQuest and Scientific American, will host a live online panel conversation on advancing diversity and inclusion in STEM.
The panel will be moderated by Editor in Chief for Scientific American, Laura Helmuth. Only the ninth Editor in Chief in the magazine’s 175-year history, Laura’s leadership and commitment to science journalism and storytelling makes her the ideal person to drive this candid conversation.
The discussion will focus on:
•the experience of each panelist as leaders in their field
•the journey and obstacles each overcame to get here
•what they identify as positive solutions that will allow for continued equity and inclusion within the scientific community and beyond.

COVID-19 Vaccine Student Volunteer Opportunity
Volunteer at One of the Several Vaccination Sites in MD

The State of Maryland is providing an opportunity for college students over the age of 18 to serve as volunteers at one of the several vaccination sites around the state.
The recently announced Maryland COVID-19 Vaccination Site Student Volunteer Program is a special part of the Maryland Responds Medical Reserve Corps. Volunteers may serve as greeters, ambulatory assistants, observers, or in other roles as assigned by the on-site volunteer coordinator.
Check out the
program website to register or learn more. The way for potential student-volunteers to initiate the process is to click on “
Become Member”. Volunteers will be assigned at vaccination sites closest to their listed address.
As part of the registration, you will be asked to:
o Fill out an online form for the Maryland Responds MRC (including signing forms stating they understand their liability coverage and confidentiality issues).
o Complete an online tutorial that explains the Maryland Responds MRC.
o Watch a short training video.
o Complete the scheduled times available to volunteer.
The USM is hoping that hundreds of students respond to the call and fill these critical administrative and support positions at our state’s vaccination sites.

FINAL REMINDER - The UMBC HPEC Fall 2022 Cohort is forming!
Submit your interest form before the February 15th deadline!
For Medical and Dental School Applicants, the UMBC Health Professions Evaluation Committee's (HPEC) Cohort process - which begins with exercises to help applicants prepare the materials they need to complete their professional school application, and results in a Committee/Composite Letter from the HPEC to accompany an applicant's other Letters of Recommendation - is set in motion nearly a year and half before an applicant plans to enter Medical or Dental School.
The next HPEC Cohort, supporting applicants planning to enter Medical or Dental School in Fall 2022, is about to begin!
Information regarding the process of expressing an interest in joining the Health Professions Evaluation Committee (HPEC) Fall 2022 Cohort has been posted to the PreMedical & PreDental Advising Office web site. Follow the link below to view the Minimum Requirements for participation and to access the online forms through which you can express your interest.
The HPEC Cohort process serves current UMBC Undergraduate students, and UMBC Alumni who completed an Undergraduate (Bachelor's) degree at UMBC within the past seven (7) years.
NEW THIS YEAR: In light of the restrictions in place on campus due to COVID-19, the mechanism for current UMBC Undergraduates to express their interest in joining the HPEC Fall 2022 Cohort has been changed from mandatory attendance at a Kickoff Workshop to the completion and submission of an online interest form. This aligns with the mechanism used by Alumni and Re-Applicants last year.
The deadlines for expression of interest from First-Time Applicants to Medical or Dental School who wish to join the HPEC Fall 2022 Cohort are:
11:59 pm on February 15, 2021 for UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (UMBC Undergraduates who plan to complete their Bachelor's degree at UMBC between January 2021 and May 2022, inclusive)
[The deadline for Alumni - May 2014 through December 2020 grads - to express interest in joining the HPEC Fall 2022 Cohort has already passed]
Re-Applicants - meaning, those who participated in a previous HPEC Cohort past the point where an HPEC Committee Letter was submitted to Medical or Dental School on their behalf - have an extended period of time to join the upcoming Cohort. This later deadline is designed to give applicants who are awaiting decisions from the current (2020-2021) application cycle additional time to decide to join the next immediate Cohort once their admission status at all of the schools they have applied to has become clearer. Please remember that you can only receive an HPEC Committee letter TWICE, so make sure that you have addressed (and improved) the weaker aspects of your applicant profile before making another attempt. As in the past, additional action beyond the expression of interest will be required to officially join the Cohort. Information about next steps will be sent via email to current undergraduates and alumni who have submitted their interest form, beginning in January and continuing on a weekly basis through the interest submission deadlines.

As a reminder, the Career Center is hosting the 2021 Career and Internship Fair Friday, February 5th from 11:30am-3:30pm. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with local employers in the healthcare industry including:
Career fairs are a great way to build professional skills such as networking, asking effective questions, and presenting yourself professionally. They provide the chance to learn more about organizations' missions, the populations they serve, work environments, challenges, and rewards. You may learn more about your intended field or learn about a new field altogether! There will also be opportunities to make connections that may be helpful now or in the future. And fairs are not just for upperclass students! Even students who are not ready for a job or internship yet can benefit by building their professional skillset in a low-risk environment in order to feel more prepared and confident for the time when they are ready to actively search for jobs.
