From the American Optometric Association website:

To promote diversity and equity in the optometric profession for generations to come, the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) have created the AOA/AOSA Opportunities in Optometry Grant program. This fund is designed as a one-time stipend for under-represented minority students interested in the field of optometry to help defray the costs associated with applying to optometry school.

Multiple grants of $1,500 each will be awarded annually to students who are chosen by the selection committee. Two rounds of grants will be awarded in 2023 in February and April. Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria to be considered by the selection committee. These funds can be used toward the very first steps necessary when pursuing a doctor of optometry degree – off-setting the cost of the OAT exam, school application costs, professional attire or travel costs associated with interviews.

The AOA Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and the AOSA Diversity Project Team have made a commitment to pave a path toward a broader and more diverse profession. The AOA/AOSA Opportunities in Optometry Grant program is a sustained effort to encourage under-represented minorities to join the family of optometry and expand access to primary eye care across the nation.

After a successful mock MCAT event over winter break, the PreMedical & PreDental Advising Office is excited to announce a new mock DAT event on the last day of spring break! This event is designed to simulate a real test day environment, which helps you prepare for this exam.

 

Participants in this event must:

·      Be a current UMBC student

·      Intend to apply to dental school in the next cycle (2023-2024 cycle)

·      Be able to come to campus on the test date (Friday, March 24th)

·      Secure their own full-length practice DAT

 

What can you expect from this event? Participants will check in, secure belongings, access and take the exam, and complete a survey about the event after completing the exam.

 

Because this is a pilot program, this event will be limited to 20 students. Registration is required, and the priority deadline is Wednesday, March 15th by 11:59pm. Exam spots will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Register here.

 

Important: Participants MUST secure their own FULL-LENGTH practice test, which they will access via the desktop computers in ENGR 122/122a on the test day. Laptops or other devices will not be permitted. The American Dental Association offers a full practice test for $100. Details under the "Practice tests" section of this page.

The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences is excited to announce that the application for the 2023-2024 Beckman Scholars Program cohort is now open!


The Beckman Scholars Program at UMBC, funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, aims to support undergraduate students with a committed interest in research in the biological and chemical sciences in pursuit of an MD/PhD. Eligibility for this program is limited to students who major in a chemical or biological sciences discipline (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology) and show a demonstrated interest in pursuing an MD/PhD degree upon completion of an undergraduate degree at UMBC.

Students selected to participate in the program will be eligible for financial and programmatic support.

Involvement in the Beckman Scholars Program would begin upon:

1) completion of the online application;

2) acceptance of conditions in the Consent Form;

3) meeting eligibility requirements;

4) completion of the Beckman Scholars Program agreement; and

5) enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student at UMBC for Fall 2023. Participation in the program will continue through August 2024.

It is important to understand that application to The Beckman Scholars Program requires: 

  • Documented status as either a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident;

  • A declared major in the biological or chemical disciplines (e.g. Biological Sciences, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, or Chemistry);

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0;

  • Status as a second year or third year student for the 2023-2024 academic year; 

  • Status as a full-time undergraduate student at UMBC for the 2023-2024 academic year; 

  • Two letters of recommendation from science faculty members

  • A written essay of purpose describing (i) Your future career interests/goals and how they align with pursuing and MD/PhD degree; (b) Your desire to be a Beckman Scholar and how you feel the program would benefit you in your pursuit of being an MD/PhD; and (c) Any current/previous research experience you have and how that experience has motivated you to pursue an MD/PhD
