New NSF and TEDCO Grant
UMBC Professors Nilanjan Banerjee and Ryan Robucci have been awarded an NSF grant from the NSF-NIH Smart and Connected Health program. The total sum is $650,000 over 3 years. It is a collaboration between UMBC, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital and UA.
The collaborators include Dr. Susan Fager, a physical therapist from Madonna, and Dr. James Parkerson from UA, who is helping with the energy harvesting component of the project. The SCH program is very competitive, and last year the acceptance rate was close to 6%. The project deals with building wearable sensing systems for environmental control and therapy for paralysis patients, and cuts across electronics, sensor analytics, and usability.

Clarksburg, Maryland is a small, unincorporated area in northern Montgomery County. Last spring, the Montgomery County Council made the decision to limit new development in Clarksburg’s Ten Mile Creek watershed, a tributary to Little Seneca Creek. The reason: Despite state-of-the-art efforts to control stormwater in previous developments, concern remains about the water quality impacts of additional hard surfaces such as roofs, parking lots and roads that prevent water from seeping into the ground, increasing surface runoff. The question is: will limiting such surfaces (referred to as impervious surfaces by scientists) be enough to protect the Ten Mile Creek and others like it?

Updates to the Animal Research Protocol Form
The IACUC recently adopted changes to the protocol application used to review and approve animal research projects.
Changes includes:
- administrative changes to document funding sources, IACUC review of relevant grant application pages, and animal monitoring
- updates on information on answering the "alternatives to animal use" questions and to document more clearly the literature search
- additions of "field study" questions, particularly when animals are captured and then housed at UMBC.
Please use this form for submission for of new animal research projects effective immediately. All other IACUC related forms are found here. If you have any questions, the ORPC staff is available to help.
