Scientists in this laboratory are trying to grasp what they call the holy grail of aquaculture: raising this powerful fish, so prized by sushi lovers, entirely in captivity.     <div class="html-content"><div><strong>July 3, 2014</strong></div><div>Dr. Lorraine Remer, a Research Professor in Physics working at the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has been named<span> among the world’s top scientists, according to the recently launched Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researchers list,</span> "The Most Influential Scientific Minds 2014." <span>According to Thomson Reuters, Highly Cited Researchers is a compilation of influential names in science that spotlights some of the “standout researchers of the last decade.” </span><span>Deriving from InCites Essential Science Indicators, a subset of the Web of Science, Highly Cited Researchers presents more than 3,000 authors in 21 main fields of science and the social sciences. These researchers earned the distinction by writing the greatest numbers of reports officially designated by Essential Science Indicators as Highly Cited Papers—ranking among the top 1% most cited for their subject field and year of publication—between 2002 and 2012. </span></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><div><strong>June 27, 2014</strong></div><div><p><span>NIH held its 2014 Regional Seminar on Program Funding and Grants Administration on June 25-27, 2014 in Baltimore, Maryland at the Inner Harbor. In partnership with NIH, UMBC and Towson University co-hosted the event. UMBC</span><span>’s</span><span> Office of the Vice President for Research was represented by Dean Drake, Sarah Parton, Deborah Waters, Tim Sparklin, Karen Barnes, and Tina Stanger. NIH staffed the event with at least 35 NIH and HHS staff of varying specialties. </span><span>Over 800 participants from across the nation and from a variety of research institutes were in attendance.</span></p></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><div><strong>June 27, 2014</strong></div><div>University of Idaho President Chuck Staben visited the UMBC campus to meet with UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski and Vice President for Research Karl Steiner to learn more about UMBC’s educational programs and explore opportunities for scientific collaborations. The visit included a tour of several laboratories on campus, including cyber security, biochemistry, the new Performing Arts and Humanities building and the HHMI facility.</div></div>
