Position Title: Sports-Based Youth Development (SBYD) Intern
Reports to: Program Coordinator – Kat Sipes
Soccer Without Borders Baltimore Director – Casey Thomas
Summary of Organization:
Soccer Without Borders (SWB) uses soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing newcomer
refugee, asylee and immigrant youth with a toolkit to overcome obstacles to growth, inclusion,
and personal success. SWB runs year-round, holistic programming to support the needs of
newcomer youth in Baltimore. Programming integrates English language learning with soccer,
academic, civic engagement, cultural exchange, and team building activities to help newcomers
positively integrate into the Baltimore community. Middle school students attend after-school
programming 4 days a week, which focuses on life skills development and English language
acquisition through soccer and academic support components.
Summary of Position:
The SBYD intern will help to provide a fun and safe learning environment for participating
refugee, asylee and immigrant youth. During our soccer play and instruction, the SBYD intern will
set up practice, run drills and games alongside the Program Coordinator, and give positive
coaching points to students athletes. Following soccer, the SBYD intern will help students with
homework and tutoring, behavior management, and will oversee volunteer tutors with the
assistance of the Program Coordinator. The intern will work with the Program Coordinator to plan
after school sessions, and will work with SWB Director in learning more about the non-profit
management components of SWB, including fundraising, grant writing, volunteer recruitment,
family and community engagement, and other relevant topics.
Responsibilities & Duties:
• Develop, plan, and implement soccer practice plans aligned with SWB curriculum
• Do all necessary preparation to ensure successful implementation of practice plans
• Manage volunteer coaches and tutors, including monitoring performance and
implementing corrective measures as needed
• Build and maintain positive and supportive relationship with all students, embodying the
philosophy that teachers are learners, learners are teachers

• Assist in program coordination, including managing behavior, managing time, and
managing student transitions and work
• Be a positive and strong leader to players – give clear instruction and feedback
• Make sure all students are doing something productive during program, involving creating
and managing projects when homework is complete
• Participate in other projects as assigned – fundraising, research, grant writing, etc.
Requirements:
• Must have high energy and be able to take the initiative
• Must be patient and willing to work with students with low English level
• Must be able to adapt in different situations and think quickly if problems arise
• Must be willing and eager to have fun with all SWB student athletes!
• Soccer knowledge/experience preferred
• Experience working with youth preferred, particularly in coaching role
• Must be highly committed
• Strong work ethic and pride in work required
Schedule:
• Intern will serve at 1 of 2 program sites:
o Vanguard Collegiate Middle School: 2:00 – 5:30PM
o John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle School: 2:00 – 5:30PM
• Intern must serve at least 2 days/week (Monday – Thursday), can serve all 4 days
• Intern must also attend office hours 1 day/week, where they will meet with SWB Director
and participate in non-profit management sessions (scheduling flexible)
• Start date: January 23, 2017
