Temporary Legal Program Assistant (Approximately October 10 through February 10)

The ACLU of Maryland seeks a dynamic individual to assist the Legal Department staff as
Temporary Legal Program Assistant. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of
Maryland is a nonBprofit organization that defends the civil rights and civil liberties of
Maryland's residents and visitors. Our 21 staff members, along with several volunteers
and interns, work to achieve our mission using litigation, legislation and public
education on a broad range of constitutional issues, including racial justice, free speech,
religious freedom, reproductive rights, and voting rights. For a fuller view of our broad

Position Overview:
The Temporary Legal Program Assistant, a position reporting to and working closely with
the Legal Administrator, staffs our Civil Rights Complaint Line, responds to all intakes,
provides paralegal and administrative support in cases, assists with our Election
Protection campaign, provides administrative support, and supervises interns and
volunteers who staff the Complaint Line and process intakes.
Core Responsibilities:
Intake and Complaint Line

Staff Complaint Line (2B3 days/week for 2B3 hours.)

Review all requests for assistance and gather information about alleged civil
rights violations.

Screen intakes for appropriate next steps.

Attend and present intakes at legal meeting.

Maintain intake databases and track status of all intakes.

Provide formal responses to requests for assistance.
Intern/Volunteer Program
• Supervise interns and volunteers for administrative tasks, Complaint Line, andother legal program needs. Office Support
• Assist with answering calls to main phone line.
• Maintain all intake files and supervise all filing activity.
• Assist with Election Protection preparations and Election Day efforts.
• Other duties as assigned by the Legal Program Administrator and Legal Director.Qualifications

Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, database software, and
internet research skills.

Superb organizational skills; detailBoriented with strong followBthrough.

Strong interpersonal skills; excellent phone manner and the ability to
communicate effectively with a diverse group of people.

Creative, selfBstarting, willingness to learn, and ability to handle and prioritize
multiple activities and responsibilities.

Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree preferred. While individuals with law degrees
are welcome to apply, this is not an attorney position and will not advance into
an attorney position.

Supervisory experience, secretarial experience, or experience working in a legal
or nonprofit setting preferred.

Spanish language proficiency a plus.
Compensation and Benefits Salary based on experience. Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays, and a friendly work environment.
