National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses Attend a virtual information session TONIGHT! 6pm RSVP

Are you looking to study terrorism? Are you hoping to work in the intelligence community? Are you considering graduate school?

 

Designed for both future practitioners and scholars, START’s flexible and fully online program provides students with advanced education on the causes, dynamics and impacts of international and domestic terrorism. The unique online format enables students to work full- or part-time while advancing their education. No prerequisite knowledge is required, yet our coursework is appropriate for both new and experienced learners.

 

Program Description
START's Graduate Certificate in Terrorism Analysis aims to train the next generation of scholars and analysts to examine questions related to the behavior of terrorists and terrorist groups, and how societies can best prepare and respond to terrorist threats and attacks. Students also develop the methodological skills necessary to pursue advanced research on and analysis of terrorism. This four-course, twelve-credit, fully online program can be completed in as little as nine-months –  or a more expanded two years. Eligibility
Eligible applicants must have earned a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. institution, or an equivalent degree at a foreign university. A 3.0 GPA is preferred, but experience may substitute. GRE scores are not required.

 

Application Information

The program accepts applications at two points during the calendar year. Applications for fall admission are due July 26, 2017. This allows upcoming fall, spring, and summer graduates to begin the program soon after they have earned their four-year degree. More information regarding the application deadlines and term timelines can be found on our website.

An online information session will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, April 5th at 6:00pm EST (GMT-4). If students are not available to attend, a virtual information session is held every month and information about the program can be requested. Dear Members of the Campus Community,

Yesterday, the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice rescinded existing guidance on Title IX regulations that protected transgender students' access to school bathrooms and locker rooms matching their gender identities. As a university that values inclusion, diversity, and the dignity of all people, we believe it is essential to affirm UMBC’s ongoing support of LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff following this decision.

UMBC will continue to fulfill its commitment to providing equal, gender-inclusive access to university facilities. UMBC is proud to offer dozens of gender-neutral restrooms across the university's public buildings, dorms, and offices—with a commitment to include all-genderrestrooms in every newly constructed building—as well as gender-inclusive housing. As a member of the America East conference, we partner with the You Can Play Project and LGBT SportSafe Inclusion Program to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ athletes in the locker room and on the playing field.

We also recognize that despite our commitment to fostering a welcoming gender-inclusive community at UMBC, LGBTQ+ people across the country will feel the impact of yesterday’s decision as it affects their access to facilities and feelings of safety and belonging. For additional support, our community members can reach out to the UMBC Counseling Center(which offers a support group for trans students), USG Center for Counseling and Consulting,Mosaic Center for Diversity and Inclusion, office of the vice president of Student Affairs,Women’s Center (which hosts bi-weekly Spectrum meetings), University Health Services(which provides inclusive health care), and LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Association. Additional resources are available through the UMBC Diversity and Inclusion site.

Over the coming weeks, we will continue to closely monitor developments regarding national protections for transgender students, including a Supreme Court case that will be heard in March on transgender student bathroom access.

An announcement from Dr. Forestiere for POLI undergraduates:

Have you written a paper in a political science course that you're especially proud of? Why let it sit in your computer? 

Consider presenting it as a poster in the Pi Sigma Alpha Undergraduate Research Conference at UMBC! The conference will be held on Wednesday April 5th from 11am to 1pm on the second floor of the Public Policy Building. Pi Sigma Alpha will pay for your poster-board and for the printing of your poster; all you have to do is make the poster (we will show you how) and then come to share it with members of the UMBC community on April 5th.
