I want to let you know that we have decided to cancel the Current Events Forum that was originally scheduled for this Wednesday, November 27th. Due to the fact that this Wednesday is the day before the Thanksgiving Break, we decided it would be best to not have the Forum this week. The race for the Arctic is on
Here are three reasons you should care:
- Climate change is
proceeding faster in the Arctic than anywhere on Earth. The Arctic is literally
melting.
- The region is home to an estimated 90 billion barrels of oil, or 6% of all reserves, and the world's
last new global trade route.
- Russia is
staging an unprecedented military buildup in the regionand the West is finally starting to
respond.

I wanted to make you aware of a lecture that that the School of Public Policy is hosting. The lecture will be given by Erin Dorrien, who is the Director for Policy at the Maryland Hospital Association
(MHA), the state’s primary advocate for Maryland’s hospitals and health
systems. In this role, she is instrumental in the development of MHA’s
workforce and capacity strategies, including developing an approach to quantify
the need for behavioral health services in the community. Erin also supports
MHA’s strategies to increase physician and community engagement in support of
Maryland’s unique Total Cost of Care Model. She will be speaking on the topic of “The Affordable Care Act’s Contraception Coverage
Requirement and the Impact on the Unintended Pregnancy Rate”. The event will take place on Thursday November 7th from 4:30 to 6:30 in the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery.

Make sure to schedule your advising appointments!
Hi Political Science Students,
I am emailing you to encourage you to sign up for an advising appointment in the coming weeks if you haven't done so already. Please remember that you will not be able to register for Spring 2020 courses until you have had your advising appointment and received clearance to register from a faculty adviser. It is important to make sure that you have received clearance to register by the time your personal registration date roles around. This way you give yourself the best chance of claiming a spot in the classes you want or need to take. Current Events Forum Reminder!
Hey Political Science Students,
I am emailing you to remind you that we are having another
current events forum this Wednesday, October 30th, at 12 p.m. in PUP 354! For
those of you who may not know, the current events forum is a student led
discussion where we talk about the current events that are going on in our
society and world today. Pizza will be

I wanted to make you aware that the Political Science Department is co-sponsoring a panel discussion event called Wall Stories. The event is being hosted by UMBC's center for Democracy and Civic Life and will take place on Monday November 11th. The event will have a panel commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago, followed by small table conversations about physical, metaphorical, personal, and societal walls that keep us apart. Opportunity to Earn Academic Credit for Internships!
Hey political science students,
I wanted to make you all aware of a very important opportunity and deadline regarding possible internships.
Every spring semester the Political Science Department
offers opportunities to earn academic credit for internships with state legislators,
judges, attorneys, and many other types of actors in politics, public policy,
public administration, and law. It also offers some internship placement
assistance and internship-related scholarships to qualified students. Students
interested in an internship with Maryland’s state legislature or in obtaining
assistance from the department with placement into a different type of
internship must apply by October 24, 2019. Meanwhile, students who obtain their
own internships may add one of the department’s two spring internship classes,
POLI 438 or POLI 448, at any time during the registration period after
obtaining the permission of the instructor. Please visit poli.umbc.edu/internships for

Here is a message from Sydney Gaskins, the President of UMBC's
Pre-Law Society.
If you are interested in, or considering going to law school
this is the organization for you! We are extremely excited to welcome you to
our organization. It's super important to us that we act as a useful and
productive resource to you all throughout your time here at UMBC. Our goal is that when it comes time to make a
decision regarding whether you want to apply to law school, you have all of the
information that you need. We are passionate about learning together and having
fun while doing it.
So, Welcome! It's going to be a great year. We have exciting
events and meetings planned for our members this year. We already have 3
different law schools signed up and confirmed to meet with our students, and
biweekly general body meetings. In fact, our first one is today Wednesday
9/18/19 during free hour (12PM-12:50PM) in Math/Psych 101. If you join Pre-Law
Society, you will be a crucial member of our team. We take an individualized

Just a friendly reminder that the start of the Current Events Forum is this Wednesday at 12 p.m. in PUP 354! More info regarding the event can be found below.
Come take part in student led discussions focused on the
current events going on in our world today! Pizza will be served on a
first-come first-serve basis, so make sure to get there quickly! The first
forum of the semester will start at 12 p.m. next Wednesday, September 18th, in
PUP 354. Future current event forums will also be held on 10/2, 10/16,

The campaign of Baltimore Mayoral Candidate Thiru Vignarajah is looking for interns to help with his campaign. Our department was provided with the following information regarding the internship with Thiru's campaign:
Thiru is running on a platform of bold and substantive ideas
to end crime and corruption. Here is a great write-up from the Baltimore Sun for a more detailed view of
Thiru and his vision for Baltimore.
Interns will gain experience crafting content for social
media, engaging in community outreach, researching potential donors, and
writing for policy purposes. We are looking for responsible, proactive, and
motivated students who are interested and eager to learn about campaigning and
political work. We are based in Baltimore City and need in-person support to
reach residents and constituents.
