PAID Summer Opportunity at Georgetown
Apply by March 6th for the Pre-Doctoral Summer Institute
The Government Department at Georgetown University will host its second annual one-week Political Science Predoctoral Summer Institute (PS-PSI) from June 12 to 16, 2023.
Applications are open now and close on March 6th.
The goals of the PS-PSI are to increase the diversity of applicants to political science PhD programs, boost the acceptance rate of under-represented students, enhance the diversity of students in those programs, and augment inclusion and equity in the discipline.
The PS-PSI pays for your travel expenses and for your lodging at Georgetown, and provides you with a $1,000 stipend. We offer you relevant materials in advance of the PS-PSI to help you prepare; provide the materials you will use at the Institute; and connect you with excellent resources to help you continue your path forward after the Institute
The PS-PSI will include substantive elements (e.g., introducing the content and methods of political science) and practical elements (e.g., assisting participants to prepare strong applications for graduate programs). Participants will also share their ideas about research directions. The PS-PSI will involve significant mentoring and networking with current faculty and PhD students from Georgetown.
Rising juniors and seniors majoring in political science or related fields at colleges and universities in DC, DE, MD, VA, and WV are welcome to apply to the PS-PSI. PS-PSI is designed for those students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in political science.
We are set to hold our 13th undergraduate research conference for political science students on Wednesday, April 5th, 2023 from 11am to 1pm! All students who have written a strong research-oriented paper for any political science course or independent study are welcome to apply.
Conference presenters usually present research that they have completed as a poster that they display on an easel to their visitors. The posters are made in Microsoft's Powerpoint. Normally, visitors study the poster for a few minutes and then interact with you about your work. It's a wonderful opportunity for you to disseminate your research and discuss your ideas to a larger audience.
Below are a few photos from previous conferences to give you an idea of what the conference would look like. In the pictures, you can see an example of a poster. Also, the UMBC Omicron Eta Pi Sigma Alpha group has received funding from the national organization of Pi Sigma Alpha to cover the costs associated with your participation in the conference, including the printing and mounting of your poster on a posterboard and lunch the day of the conference. Once we know who is participating, we will distribute information about how to make a poster in Powerpoint and if there is enough interest we will also hold a workshop.
Please consider participating if you have a strong paper from a class or other research experience that you would like to present! It's a wonderful experience for everyone - for presenters and visitors alike.

Help Develop a Civic Engagement Workshop for Latinx Youth
A Narrative-Based Curriculum for Writing and Civic Engagement of Latinx Youth
Because of an opportunity gap, Latinx youth lag behind their White American peers in civic engagement and college attainment. To help close this gap, this project will create the content of a writing and civic engagement workshop for Latinx youth in Baltimore. The project team will be working with/for the Latino Racial Justice Circle (LRJC), a local nonprofit organization that promotes the social inclusion of immigrants. The content of the workshop will be entirely digital and will consist of oral histories by local Latinx community leaders, news stories about the local Latinx community, writing prompts, and discussion questions. Once completed, the LRJC will deliver the workshop regularly for Latinx students of local public high schools.
CoLab is a 4-week paid summer narrative-based research internship for undergraduate UMBC students. Participants will create an effective narrative about UMBC's campus, communities, and lives with an interdisciplinary team of students. Open to all majors, this is an excellent opportunity for students in STEM fields to learn to tell effective stories and for students in social science and humanities fields to gain research and technical skills.

PUB 300 will engage students in academic, experiential and intercultural learning in and about South Africa. Students will focus on contemporary social challenges and the strategies that government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and citizen activists are using
to address them.
Course activities include:
- Service-learning with local NGOs
- Meetings with activists, NGO leaders and government officials
- Visits to sites of historical and cultural significance, including Parliament, the District 6 Museum, Table Mountain, and the surrounding Western Cape region

The Department of Political Science is looking for two strong candidates to represent us at the 63rd Annual Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference (NAFAC) in Annapolis, taking place April 11-13, 2023. From the conference organizers:
NAFAC is a leading foreign affairs conference for undergraduate students to
discuss pressing global issues. The conference provides the opportunity for students to engage
with future civil and military leaders on the grounds of the United States Naval Academy in
Annapolis, Maryland.
This year's conference explores the topic, "Democracies Divided: The Proliferation of
Polarization." The topic explores how authoritarian states seek to weaponize modern constructs
against democratic states, and how democracies around the world are seeking to heal their
internal and external divisions in order to promote stability in the international community.
This conference will include FREE room and board and should be an incredible experience. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors with high GPAs (over 3.6), and those who have not previously attended a conference supported by UMBC, though all are welcome to apply.
To apply, please submit one concise paragraph including:
(1) current year and GPA at UMBC;
(2) why you would be a strong candidate to represent UMBC, given your experiences and/or specific coursework.

URGENT Model UN Spring 2023 Applications are Due 2/5

A message from Model UN Vice President Eli Sharp:
Hey all!
It's been a while! If you are on this email list, it is because you have expressed interest in Model UN in past semesters. I have some very time dependent updates on Model UN this semester (
the application deadline is this upcoming Sunday at 11:59pm), so I won't waste too many words saying I hope you had a good break and are successfully entering your spring semester here at UMBC! As a reminder, we love any and all skill levels in Model UN, and we are by no means an exclusively "Political Science" club, so please do not feel intimidated by the prospects of being on the team just because you are faithful to another major.
This semester, we hope to take a select delegation of you to a very special conference. Hosted by NMUN, this international conference will take place in New York City from April 10th-14th. During the conference, universities from around the world send thousands of young delegates to New York for the week in hopes that they successfully arrive at mock resolutions to the world's most pressing issues, as mediated by a simulation of various bodies of the United Nations. Spread over 5 days, these committee sessions will be complemented by lots of free time in NYC to (safely) roam, eat great food, and make new friends. The week will end with the conference renting out a club in Manhattan for the "delegate dance". Yes, it's fun, that's why I put it in bold.
In order to assess who we would like to bring to this conference to represent UMBC Model UN, we have created an
application for the team.
Everyone (including vets and e-board members)
who wishes to be considered for the team must fill this application out. If you have applied in the past, this application will look very similar.
This application is due SOON! This upcoming Sunday, February 5th, at 11:59pm, we will close the application acceptance window. We hope to have the team picked and notified of their status by 10pm on Monday, February 6th (the following day). If you do not receive an email by that time, you unfortunately did not make the team.
Full disclosure: these next couple weeks will be fast moving, with a few deadlines (including payment, which we estimate will be around $200, but we'll get to that soon) and meetings coming up fairly quickly. We are super excited to get started on what we're sure will be a great semester of MUN!

Maryland Student Legislature Seeking New Members
Gain valuable legislative experience!
UMBC's recently re-launched Maryland Student Legislature (MSL) delegation is recruiting for Spring 2023.
The delegation has co-won Best Delegation with McDaniel College, participated in two annual conferences, and had several bills passed. Members have the opportunity to network with MD state officials, as well as learn about state law.
If you're interested, meet us at Involvement Fest on February 8th and join our interest meeting that evening. Our amazing president, Zoe Smith, will be there. We hope to see you soon.
Founded in 1989 at the University of Maryland, MSL has provided an invaluable education in civics and leadership to Maryland's students for more than three decades.
At MSL events, campus leaders hone their speech, debate, and political skills in a simulation of the Maryland General Assembly, gaining real-world experience working within the legislative process. They network with other young activists and aspiring policy wonks, learning skills that prepare them for careers in public service.
In addition to the legislative simulation, MSL brings political and civic leaders from all parts of Maryland to our events to speak with students and answer their questions. Governors, Lieutenant Governors, Attorneys General, Comptrollers, leaders of the House and Senate, members of Congress, Mayors, Councilmembers, and countless other local, state, and federal officials have participated in MSL events over the years.
MSL alumni have gone on to serve in the Maryland General Assembly, the Governor's Office, work in Congress and the Executive Branch, across federal agencies, and lead successful careers in law, politics, journalism, civil service, academia, and much more.

Maryland Y Youth & Government is a special program specifically designed to give high school students a hands-on lesson in how government works. Teens will learn how to elect their own leaders, debate, legislate bills, and lobby for their vision of a better future!
The program is open to all high school students in the state of Maryland regardless of how much or how little you may know about government and the legislative process. We'll teach you everything you need to know as all of your efforts culminate into a 3-day mock legislative assembly at the Maryland State House in Annapolis!
PROGRAM DATES
Students (referred to as delegates) from the same area or school form small groups (referred to as delegations) that meet weekly or bi-weekly under the guidance of an adult advisor. Delegates also participate in the following conferences:
- Training Conference: February 11, 2023
- Pre-Legislative Conference: March 18, 2023
- Officer Training, Annapolis, MD: April 20-21, 2023 (Officers only)
- State Legislative Conference, Annapolis, MD: April 22-24, 2023
Delegations are arranged regionally and in connection with a sponsoring entity, typically a Y or high school. To find a delegation in your area or for more information about starting a delegation at your school or in your community, please email mdyandg@ymaryland.org. Seeking 2 Students for Foreign Affairs Conference

The Department of Political Science is looking for two strong candidates to represent us at the 63rd Annual Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference (NAFAC) in Annapolis, taking place April 11-13, 2023.
From the conference organizers:
NAFAC is a leading foreign affairs conference for undergraduate students to discuss pressing global issues. The conference provides the opportunity for students to engage with future civil and military leaders on the grounds of the United States Naval Academy in
Annapolis, Maryland.
This year's conference explores the topic, "Democracies Divided: The Proliferation of Polarization." The topic explores how authoritarian states seek to weaponize modern constructs against democratic states, and how democracies around the world are seeking to heal their internal and external divisions in order to promote stability in the international community.
This conference will include FREE room and board and should be an incredible experience.
Preference will be given to juniors and seniors with high GPAs (over 3.6), and those who have not previously attended a conference supported by UMBC, though all are welcome to apply.
To apply, please submit one concise paragraph including:
(1) current year and GPA at UMBC;
(2) why you would be a strong candidate to represent UMBC, given your experiences and/or specific coursework.
