2019 MBI Summer Undergraduate Research Program

<Tagline>Math Bio REU, June 10 - August 8, 2019</Tagline>

Application deadline is Friday February 15

The Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI) will host a multi-institution REU program in the mathematical biosciences, administered by MBI from the campus of The Ohio State University.

REU participants will work on projects in areas such as molecular evolution, neuronal oscillatory patterning, cancer genetics, epidemics and vaccination strategies, and animal movement. Participants will work individually or in pairs under the guidance of expert mentors to make specific research contributions in these areas, often leading to a peer-reviewed publication and conference presentations. The REU program will incorporate various professional and research-skills development activities throughout the summer to help ensure the participants’ success in completing their summer project and to prepare them for graduate study or entering the workforce.

The goal of this MBI NSF-funded program is to introduce students to exciting new areas of the mathematical biosciences, and to involve them in collaborative research with their peers and faculty mentors. The program consists of three parts:

Mathematical Biosciences Bootcamp (June 10th - 14th, 2019) at MBI:

Participants are introduced to various areas of the mathematical biosciences via lectures, computer labs, and visits to various biological labs at The Ohio State University.

Mentored Research Experience (June 17th - August 2nd, 2019) at The Ohio State University, Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis, or the New Jersey Institute of Technology:

During the second component of the program, participants complete a mentored research project individually or in pairs at one of MBI’s partner institutions. Participants also attend a weekly online seminar series and virtual all-program meeting.

Capstone Conference (August 5th - 8th, 2019) at MBI:

For the final week of the program, the students return to the MBI to participate in the Capstone Conference. A student-centered conference featuring talks and posters by students doing research in mathematical biology, keynote talks by prominent mathematical biologists, a graduate studies recruitment fair, and other special features including a conference dinner and social event. Note that the Capstone Conference is open to all undergraduate students doing research in the mathematical biosciences, not only to students participating in the MBI REU.

***Students accepted into the full program will receive room and board, a stipend, and a travel reimbursement allowance.

Application Process:

To apply to our program, please go to www.nsfreu.org. The website will ask you to create a user account. When your account is created, follow the steps provided on the website to complete the common application. Make sure to select "MBI REU" when selecting the Sites to which you want to apply. The deadline for completing the application to our program is February 15th, 2019.

Due to NSF funding restrictions, eligibility for the REU program is limited to undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

The deadline to submit your application for the REU Program is Tuesday, February 15th. Applications for the Capstone Conference ONLY will be due later in the summer.

In fact, there is another event posted earlier on the PME board for women in mathematics that takes place at the JMM.

I am including a link below. It is an overwhelmingly large meeting, so if you have questions please comment here or e-mail me.
Math Meeting at the AAAS in DC

<Tagline>Free registration for math students</Tagline>

I am writing to you as the Secretary of the Mathematics Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The upcoming annual meeting of AAAS is February 14-17 in Washington, D.C. In order to increase the participation of mathematical scientists at this event, we are offering undergraduate and graduate mathematics students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, free conference registration. The only additional commitment in return is to attend the Mathematics Section meeting on Friday morning, which will feature presentations by the newly elected AAAS mathematics fellows. The conference program features over half a dozen scientific symposia with mathematical content, such as mathematics in biomedicine, information privacy, quantum computing, or computational reproducibility, in addition to many other cutting-edge topics.

I would appreciate it if you could bring this opportunity to the attention of your students and faculty. Anybody interested should email me (Reinhard Laubenbacher, laubenbacher@uchc.edu) for information on how to register.

-----------------

This would be a great opportunity (owing to proximity and free-ness of registration) to participate in a scientific meeting in a low pressure situation. There will be a lot of interesting sessions that pertain to mathematical applications. PME may even consider doing this as a field trip. Please send me an e-mail or comment below if you are interested.
