<Title>2025 Mathematics Summer Internships at the National Security Agency</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span><span>The National Security Agency (NSA) is </span></span><span>advertising three exciting Summer opportunities for</span><span> undergraduate and graduate students majoring in mathematics, statistics, and physics!</span></div><span><div><span><br></span></div>Applications for Summer 2025 will be open for submissions on September 1st for the Directors Summer Program (DSP), Cryptanalysis and Signals Analysis Summer Program (CASASP), and Graduate Mathematics Program (GMP). These 12 week paid internships provide students with the opportunity to work directly with NSA Mathematicians on mission-critical problems and experience the excitement of the NSA mathematics community. The attached document provides additional details on the three programs, as well as the hiring process and requirements.</span><br><br><span>While next summer is a ways away, we do encourage early applications as every participant must obtain a security clearance. Completed applications must be submitted by September 30th, 2024. The projects cover a wide range of real-world topics, including big data, optimization, transportation, quantum computing, and biotech. We offer two locations for the RIPS 2023 program: <span>RIPS-LA (UCLA campus) and RIPS-Singapore</span>.  </p><p><br></p><p>The application deadline is <strong>Monday, February 5, 2024</strong>. <Title>High School Science Olympiad: Volunteers Needed!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>We need faculty and student volunteers (both undergraduate and graduate) for the <strong>High School Science Olympiad </strong>planned and organized by the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences on January 13th at UMBC. </p><p><br></p><p>There are almost 700 hundred participants by now from all across Maryland. We urgently need students and faculty volunteers to proctor and grade the (mostly multiple choice) exams. </p><p><br></p><p>If you can volunteer for about three hours at various time slots during the day, that would be awesome. We are in urgent need of it.     <div class="html-content"><div>Dr. April Householder and the<a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/undergradresearch/posts/136339" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Undergraduate Research and Prestigious Scholarships Office have announced a workshop</a> on <u><strong>this Friday (10/20) from 12n-1pm in ITE 102</strong></u> for students who are interested in applying for the Goldwater Scholarship. Eligible students:<br></div><div><ul><li>Are current sophomores or juniors having 1 or 2 years of undergraduate study remaining</li><li>Have an average of at least B or the equivalent (FYI, in recent years, nationally competitive applicants have had a GPA above 3.3)</li><li>Are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.</li><li>Have a demonstrated interest in a <u><em>research career </em></u>in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering.  The eligible fields of study <a href="https://goldwaterscholarship.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Fields-of-Study.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">are described in more detail here.</a>  Note: Students who intend to pursue a health profession are only eligible if they plan to have a significant research component to their career path (e.g., an MD/PhD)</li></ul><div>The application includes a <a href="https://goldwaterscholarship.gov/developing-the-research-essay/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Research Essay</a> that details either prior or proposed research by the applicant, so please keep this in mind as you share this information with potential applicants.</div></div><div><br></div><div>As a prestigious scholarship, the Goldwater Scholarship has a two-step selection process. Students' applications are first reviewed by the UMBC Goldwater Committee, which selects up to 4 UMBC students to nominate to the National selection process, and the nominees then complete the National application process. </div><div><br></div><div>In the past, Universities have been allowed an additional (5th) nominee if at least one applicant was a transfer student.     <div class="html-content"><span>Hello PME members!</span><div><br></div><div>If you're interested in preparing for collegiate math competitions, or just in taking a fun course, please consider joining MATH 479, the Mathematical Problem Solving Seminar.</div><div><br></div><div>MATH 479 is a one credit course (repeatable) which meets on Friday afternoons from 2-3.  We will spend our time working individually or collaboratively on math puzzles and problems.  In the fall, students will represent UMBC at math competitions, whereas in the spring we will focus more on general preparation and collaborative problem solving.</div><div><br></div><div>We are looking for students who have finished their intro proof courses and have a strong grade record.  Please email Dr. Nanes at <a rel="nofollow external" class="bo">knanes@umbc.edu</a> if you are interested.</div><div><br></div><div>We look forward to seeing you in the seminar!</div></div>
