2024 Undergraduate Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS)

In this program, students work in teams on projects that are sponsored by an industrial partner. The projects cover a wide range of real-world topics, including big data, optimization, transportation, quantum computing, and biotech. We offer two locations for the RIPS 2023 program: RIPS-LA (UCLA campus) and RIPS-Singapore.  

The application deadline is Monday, February 5, 2024. Please forward to as many eligible undergraduate students as possible!

RIPS-LA: June 24 - August 23, 2024

RIPS-Singapore: May 20 - July 19, 2024

We need faculty and student volunteers (both undergraduate and graduate) for the High School Science Olympiad planned and organized by the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences on January 13th at UMBC. 

There are almost 700 hundred participants by now from all across Maryland. We urgently need students and faculty volunteers to proctor and grade the (mostly multiple choice) exams. 

If you can volunteer for about three hours at various time slots during the day, that would be awesome. We are in urgent need of it. Here is the webpage to volunteer:  https://sciolympiad.umbc.edu/volunteer/

It would be great also if you can pass this information around to appropriate undergradute students who cal also serve as volunteers. Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

PME (national) will be offering up to $1,200 to defray travel, housing, and subsistence expenses for eligible PME members to attend JMM 2024. To be eligible for consideration for a PME Undergraduate Travel Grant, applicants must:

• Submit an abstract for a Pi Mu Epsilon Contributed Session at JMM through the AMS abstract submission portal no later than Tuesday, September 12, 2023, or
• Submit an abstract for a PME poster session through the AMS abstract submission portal no later than Tuesday, September 26, 2023
• Complete the application for the travel grant, including abstract number, no later than Friday, October 17, 2023 (11:59 p.m. ET). The travel grant application can be found here: https://www.mathprograms.org/db/programs/1478;
• Be enrolled as (1) a full-time undergraduate student or (2) a full-time graduate student who has accumulated fewer than 30 credits at a U.S. institution; and
• Be a member of PME by the travel funding deadline of 10/17/2023.

Additional Details:

• PME National Council will work to recognize outstanding presentations, as we have done in the past before COVID.
• Co-presenters can each receive funding as long as they meet the above guidelines.
• There is no cap on the number of speakers that can receive funding from any one chapter.
• PME funding will not be given to “delegates” from a chapter who are not presenting in either of the PME Contributed Paper Session or the AMS-PME Undergraduate Student Poster Session.

Walkthrough for Submitting an Abstract and Applying for PME Funding: 

1. Presenters will submit their abstract directly to the AMS at https://meetings.ams.org/math/jmm2024/cfp.cgi.
2. Scroll down to PME (PI MU EPSILON); BEGIN A SUBMISSION, and click the link.
3. Login and/or make an account.
4. Select either the Paper Session or the Poster Session.
5. Be sure to include all co-presenter information if co-presenters will also seek funding through PME.
6. Once you complete your abstract submission you will receive an Abstract ID#.
7. This Abstract ID# is needed to apply for the PME Undergraduate Travel Grant which you do by visiting https://www.mathprograms.org/db/programs/1478.
8. One application should be made by each individual who is requesting support, whether they are in a group project or a one-person project. Every co-presenter must submit their own travel grant application.

Looking for one or two UMBC undergraduate students to work for the 2023-2024 academic year. The project is to investigate parameter estimation methods for mathematical models of viral infections such as HIV. Students will be paid hourly and expected to work 10 hours per week.

Requirements: Students must have taken Math 225 and have some programming experience
