Graduate Students Kick Off Orientation Week with Picnic

The Department of Physics welcomed its largest incoming class of graduate students ever on Monday, August 21. The students participated in a full day of orientation activities, including an information session, a tour of the department, and a picture-taking session. In the evening, the Physics Graduate Student Association hosted a picnic at Patapsco State Park. The picnic was a great opportunity for the students to get to know each other and learn more about the department. They enjoyed food, games, and conversation.

New article lead by Dr. Eileen Meyer in Nature Astronomy

Contradicting long-standing theories, a recent study by Associate Professor Eileen Meyer and colleagues has found that x-ray emissions from black hole jets vary over short periods, and occur throughout the jets rather than solely at their origin. The research, based on data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, necessitates a reassessment of how particle acceleration works in these jets and potentially the wider universe. The article, "Variability of extragalactic X-ray jets on kiloparsec scales" was published 29 May 2023 in the journal Nature Astronomy.

PhD student C. Nunn wins prestigious NRC Postdoc Fellowship

PhD student Cory Nunn has recently been awarded a Post Doctoral Fellowship through the highly competitive National Research Council (NRC) Research Associateships Program (RAP) . Cory is currently finishing up his PhD under the mentorship of Dr. Todd Pittman, and will soon begin his NRC Postdoc at The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD.

Cory's experimental research is in the area of quantum optics and quantum information processing with single photon qubits. His PhD work involved a new conditional measurement process called "Zero-Photon Subtraction" (ZPS), and led to several publications in prestigious journals. ZPS is of fundamental interest in the area of "quantum state preparation" and has practical applications in quantum communications. Cory will continue his research in quantum measurement and optical quantum information processing at NIST.
