<Title>Assistant Professor Search</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Department of Physics, Atmospheric Physics Program (ATPH), invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position with a research focus in one or more of the following research areas: regional to global scale climate modeling with emphasis in boundary layer processes, numerical simulation of aerosol-cloud interactions, computational fluid dynamics, or other areas related to numerical weather/climate simulation to begin on or before August 2020. Exceptionally qualified candidates may also be considered at a higher level of appointment. Candidates are expected to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the department and group through research, teaching and service.  We seek candidates who have the capacity to establish a vigorous, externally funded research program that complements existing faculty research interests, and who are able to teach effectively both the undergraduate physics curricula and graduate atmospheric courses in the ATPH program.  A PhD in Physics or in a closely related field is required. </p><p>UMBC is a dynamic public research university integrating teaching, research and service.  It is located in the Baltimore suburbs, 15 minutes from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and 30 minutes from Washington D.C., in an area with a high concentration of federal and private research laboratories and research universities. The Department of Physics currently consists of 21 tenure-track and 16 research faculty, 46 PhD students and 160 undergraduate majors.  The department offers a BS and BA in Physics, and both MS and PhD degrees in Physics and in Atmospheric Physics.  Research expenditures currently exceed $6M per year.     <div class="html-content">Atmospheric physics graduate student Qianqian Song has just received the Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST) Fellowship⁠—one of just 59 such fellowships granted nationwide this year. The award provides $45,000 per year for three years for her to continue her studies at UMBC with Dr. Zhibo Zhang, associate professor of physics. <br><br>

    <div class="html-content">New article published in Science Advances<br><br>“Tip-enhanced strong coupling spectroscopy and control of a single quantum emitter.”<br><br>
    
    UMBC Physics professors Matthew Pelton and Theodosia Gougousi, UMBC Physics graduate students Haixu Leng and Jaron Kropp, and collaborators in the University of Colorado Physics department have published an article in Science Advances showing that a tunable nanotip optical cavity controls hybrid quantum states of a single emitter at room temperature.<br><br>

The book focuses on the relation of Quantum Thermodynamics to Quantum Information and its implications for quantum computers and next generation quantum technologies.     <div class="html-content">The American Institute of Physics (AIP) recognizes the UMBC Physics Department for awarding a large percentage of PhD's to women. <br><br>AIP recently released a comprehensive report providing a detailed analysis of the representation and participation of women in physics and astronomy fields. UMBC was recognized as one of only 21 Physics Departments in the US that awarded 30% or more of their PhD's to women.<br><br>

<Title>UMBC undergraduate has highly cited paper</Title>

    <div class="html-content">UMBC Physics BS graduate, Jonathan McHenry (class of 2009) and Associate Professor Laszlo Takacs’s paper, “Temperature of the milling balls in shaker and planetary mills”, <em>Journal of Materials Science</em> <strong>41</strong>, 5246-5249 (2006) (<a rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10853-006-0312-4)</a> has recently received renewed interest in the scientific community with 27 citation in the last two years and over 86 overall.<br><br>
    
    <u>Synopsis</u><br>
    
    Ball mills are used to prepare fine powders and to induce alloying and chemical reactions via mechanical deformation. Thermal processes are also at play, thus knowing the temperature inside the mill is important, but it had rarely been studied. Thus when Jonathan McHenry measured the temperature increase of the milling balls in two laboratory mills as a summer project some 15 years ago, unique and very valuable information could be obtained. He used a simple calorimeter from the introductory laboratory but made careful corrections for systematic errors.
    
     It turned out that if different mills were run at similar milling intensities, the balls warmed up more, when oblique collisions and friction were involved, like in planetary mills, where temperatures over 200 °C were typical, while close-to-normal impacts, dominant in shaker mills, resulted in much less temperature increase.</div>
