Today I'm sharing with the group a portion of a television interview with Simone de Beauvoir entitled "Why I'm a Feminist". We will watch probably about 20 minutes of the interview and then discuss some of the themes and core ideas expressed in the interview and what we think about them.

We will be meeting in PAHB 229 at 1 and the meeting will formally end at 2. This is the interview for anyone unable to attend.

We will be meeting for the first 2 weeks on discord to see how things pan out with COVID but we are trying to meet in person after that if possible.

Sorry for the last minute notice. Due to the recent notification sent out by UMBC residential life, we have decided to move our in-person meeting online for this week and possibly the rest of the semester. We will be meeting on the PhilAnon discord tomorrow at our normal time (2:00-3:00 PM).

This Friday the 22nd, one of our members, Claire, will be leading a discussion about how to evaluate art in a society where it is commercialized. How does a price tag affect the inherent value of artwork? And how is art itself changed by a commercial market? There is no reading this week, just show up ready to philosophize.

Claire is a non-officer member so I want to give them a special thank you for stepping up to the plate. If anyone has an interest in presenting as well or just wants to suggest a topic or reading, Thomas and I would love to talk about it.

Hey Everybody!

This is going to be a super interesting discussion. Does crime pay? Does dishonesty pay? Does cheating pay? What is justice anyhow? If there is a plurality of conceptions of justice, what conception ought we follow when they contradict one another? if a society's conception of justice is in fact unjust how ought an individual conduct themselves? Should we be obedient or disobedient? 

I want to thank everybody who has been coming to meetings and sharing their impressions and opinions about the material under discussion, but I also want to thank everybody who has been quietly taking everything in. I would especially like to thank Clarence for being the first person, besides me and Curtis, to share some ideas he is stoked on. Such willingness to put oneself out there is really what is going to make this group even more rad than it already is. The Friday after this, Clare is going to be discussing the meaning of art creation in a capitalist society that seeks to turn everything unique and special into a commodity. What would you like to share?
