Love of Learning Awards help fund post-baccalaureate professional development for active Phi Kappa Phi members to include (but not be limited to): Graduate or professional studies, doctoral dissertations, continuing education, career development, travel related to teaching/research/learning, etc. Recipients of the Fellowship award are not eligible to apply.

Two hundred awards, at $500 each, are distributed each year.  We offer two application cycles each year, awarding one hundred winners per cycle. 

The competition is open to all active (dues current) Phi Kappa Phi members who:

• Have completed their baccalaureate studies by application submission deadline.
• Have not yet received a Fellowship or Award of Excellence grant.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi currently awards fifty-one Fellowships of $5,000 each and six at $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each active Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards.

Congratulations to Stefany Wolfe, Social Work major at UMBC at Shady Grove, on winning the Shirley C. Sorensen award for 2016 - 2017. Stefany received her award at a luncheon on January 23, 2017. In attendance were Simon Stacey, Chapter President; Connie Pierson, Chapter President-Elect; Marilyn Demorest, Past President; Stefany Wolfe, and her father.

The Shirley C. Sorensen Undergraduate Academic Excellence Award is bestowed in recognition of the numerous contributions Dr. Sorensen has made over many years to The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and especially to the former five-campus chapter, University of Maryland Chapter 22 UM-UMBC.   

            The University of Maryland Baltimore Campuses chapter, Chapter 22 UM-UMBC, inducts members from the University Maryland Baltimore and the University of Maryland Baltimore County.  Each fall, this chapter invites applications from its undergraduate student members for a $1,000 Shirley C. Sorensen Award.  Eligibility criteria for the award are as follows:

            (1)   Each student applicant shall be a member of Chapter 22 UM-UMBC

            (2)   Each applicant shall have at least one remaining semester of undergraduate study at the time the award is presented. 

            (3)   Each student applicant shall be selected on the basis of Academic Excellence as demonstrated by outstanding grades, academic honors and recognition, and activities in the University or in the Community.

            (4)   Each student applying for the Shirley C. Sorensen Award must complete the application below and submit it to the Director of Awards for Chapter 22 UM-UMBC.

            The deadline for applications for the December 2016 Shirley C. Sorensen Award is Monday, December 5, 2016.  The winning applicant will be chosen by December 19, 2016, and the decision will be communicated to applicants shortly afterwards. Students at the University of Maryland Baltimore or the University of Maryland Baltimore County should submit their completed application along with an unofficial transcript by email to:

Dissertation Fellowships

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi will now award ten Dissertation Fellowships of $10,000 each to active members who are doctoral candidates and are completing dissertations.

The fellowship supports students in the dissertation writing stage of doctoral study. Awards are for 12 months of dissertation writing. All pre-dissertation requirements should be met by the application deadline, including approval of the dissertation proposal.

Study Abroad Grants

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year.

Scholar and Artist Awards

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi- Chapter 22-UM-UMBC is proud to announce the 2015 winner of the Sorenson Award. Congratulations to Marina Mizell! Marina is a double major in Biological Sciences and Interdisciplinary Sciences:  Pediatric Psychological and Neurological Development. She is a senior and plans to enroll in medical school after graduation. Marina received her award at a luncheon on January 28, 2016.

The Phi Kappa Phi Scholar Award and Phi Kappa Phi Artist Award honor those individuals who demonstrate the ideals of the Society through their activities, achievements, and scholarship. Awardees receive $1,000 honoraria, a life membership and a recognition citation. Each award is given once per biennium.

First presented in 1974, the Scholar Award recognizes excellence in teaching, research, and public service. In 1983, the Artist Award was established to recognize the achievements of those who, in addition to their outstanding scholarship, have displayed talents in the broad realm of the arts–creative, graphic, performing, visual, and/or fine arts.

The deadline for applying is February 1, 2016
