Write it all down to stay organized.

You have a full plate — there’s no doubt about that. Between your part-time job, unpaid internship, after-school commitments, social life and schoolwork — you have zero time to yourself. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed, stressed, gain weight or get anxious. I wanted to provide a few tips to make sure your internship doesn’t drive you crazy. I spoke to my interns and my @internqueenTwitter followers about their quick fixes to make sure they don’t go nuts!

1. When the internship is done, stop interning. Today, there is a notion that the more hours you work, the more effective you are. This couldn’t be further from the truth. You want to work efficiently. It’s not about the hours you put in, it’s about the work that gets done. When your internship hours are done, wrap up your work,make sure you are organized and move on to the next thing on your to-do list.

2. Initiate “me” time. Somewhere in your schedule you must have some time to yourself. Try your best to leave at least 30 minutes every day where nothing is scheduled. This can be in the morning, afternoon or at night. Let yourself zone out, lay down, meditate, go for a walk — whatever you need to do to relax.

3. Make exercise a priority. Whenever I get stressed, this is my go-to solution. I’ve found that working out consistently makes me less stressed. It’s as if I know that I’ll have time to work out the feelings of anxiety at the gym or at the track later that day — my body has become accustomed to it.

4. Change your soundtrack. Throughout the day I find myself listening to “pump-up” music. This might be while I’m in the car, running, getting ready or even while I’m studying or researching. I’ve found that switching it up and putting together a relaxation playlist really helps me change my mood and loosen up.

5. Always leave time for organizing. Be very aware of your time at the internship. Always give yourself 20 minutes at the end (if possible) to wrap up your daily tasks, update your internship coordinator, file emails and update your to-do lists. Don’t let your work get sloppy and all over the place.

6. Mix tea into your routine. Our bodies are so used to running on coffee that we constantly refill and overdrink the substance. Try mixing things up by adding some tea into your day. For example, every day after 4 p.m. when I need that next pick-me-up, I go for tea. This makes me feel more relaxed and changes my mood. It still provides that energy boost as well.

7. Stop committing things to memory. Newsflash! You will forget. Write everything down that you need to do — personally and professionally. No matter how smart you think you are, you will forget something. If you know you have everything written down it will make you feel much more calm and collected.

8. Use a calendar system. In my book, ALL WORK, NO PAY I talk about creating your calendar system. It’s important to treat yourself like a professional and write down all of your commitments so you don’t overbook. This will help you stay organized. Every morning the first thing you do should be to check the calendar. Include notices regarding when tests are happening and when bills need to be paid.

Intern of the Week: Manpreet Suri at UMBC

<Tagline>Learn more about Manpreet's summer experience!</Tagline>

    Manpreet Suri
McNair Summer Research Fellow at UMBC in Baltimore, MD
Major: Information Systems

Briefly describe your research position, including your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.

I attend a professional development workshop daily, such as etiquette, personal statement writing, and effective presentation skills. I also write code, build and program hardware, design a three-dimensional model, print three-dimensional models, and build a prototype of my device. My responsibilities also include sending a daily progress update to my mentor.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and what have you found most challenging?

I enjoyed the opportunity to work in an independent study environment because it allows me to make my own schedule and have flexibility in deciding what I want to work on. This freedom comes with the responsibility of having to teach myself how to complete many of the tasks that I am assigned. I am grateful to have a mentor that gives me meaningful guidance.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another summer activity?

This opportunity has inherently made me a better learner because my daily tasks require that I learn and grasp new ideas throughout the research process. It also gives me a wonderful perspective about time management since I have to develop a healthy schedule for myself. This experience has made me a more effective communicator and public speaker.

How do you see your summer work as meaningful? Has it given you a chance to work on issues or with communities that matter to you?

I see my work as meaningful because it is geared toward an under-served community, the visually impaired. This population is often overlooked and it gives me great pleasure to be able to design and build a device that caters to their needs. Assistive technologies are meant for those who have disabilities or need assistance in their day to day tasks. The visually impaired deserve to have all the same opportunities as a sighted person.

How has your summer experience shaped the way you think about your power to impact the world?

At first I didn’t realize how significant my project was, it was something I wanted to do to learn the research process and I enjoyed building hardware. When I realized that there are 285 million visually impaired people in the world, I started to realize that the magnitude of my project is much more far reaching than I had originally anticipated. I have learned that every project we work on is a part of a bigger picture and to never underestimate the impact of our research.

US Dept of State Summer Intern Application - Last Call

<Tagline>Deadline to Apply- November 2nd</Tagline>

We are still accepting applications for the U.S. Department of State Student Experience Program (formerly known as the U.S. Department of State Internship Program Spring/Summer/Fall).

Click here (https://state.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/326501200) to go directly to USAJobs to start the Gateway to State online application. Please note that the deadline to submit completed applications is November 2, 2012.

This program offers U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in 10-week, unpaid internships
     that provide intensive educational and professional experience within
    the environment of America’s principle foreign affairs agency.

The unpaid internships are available at many of the over 265 U.S.
    embassies, consulates and missions to international organizations around
     the world, as well as at the Department of State in Washington, D.C.
    and other locations throughout the U.S. Participants gain first-hand,
    hands-on experience, and learn the realities of working in – and with –
    Foreign and Civil Service professionals who are at the forefront of
    America’s diplomatic efforts.

As a Student Experience intern, you may have the opportunity to:

Participate in meetings with senior level U.S. government or foreign government officials;

Draft, edit, or contribute to cables, reports, communications,
    talking points, or other materials used by policy makers in furthering
    U.S. foreign policy objectives;

Help organize and support events, including international and/or
    multi-lateral meetings and conferences on critical global issues;

Contribute to the management and administration of the Department of State and America’s foreign policy; and

Engage directly with U.S. or foreign audiences to promote U.S.
    foreign policy and improve understanding of U.S. culture and society.

So consider spending your summer 2013 with the U.S. Department of
    State, witnessing and participating in the formulation and
    implementation of U.S. foreign policy, working closely with the U.S.
    diplomats and civil servants who carry out America’s foreign policy
    initiatives. You’ll not only have an experience of a lifetime, you may
    even earn educational credit.*

* Applicants
     who are selected for a U.S. Department of State Student Experience can
    contact the selecting bureau, or the central Student Programs office, if
     they require further details about the program to support their request
     for academic credit.
