Undergraduate Research in Switzerland

Learn about this three-credit experience which includes training in qualitative field research methods followed by a week applying these techniques in Switzerland through our International Field Research Program.
This is appropriate for students of all majors. The three credits are upper-level elective credit in HAPP. Students who have taken this course/research opportunity will be there to tell you about their experiences.
A limited number of $500 travel fellowships are available to for spring 2013. Applications are due soon.

Name: Debòrah F. Kadiri
Hometown: Silver Spring, Maryland
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: Since September of 2009.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I am the President and Chaplain of UMBC's Gospel Choir and I also work with UMBC's Residential Life.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Seeker of and advocate for fundamental, internal, absolute and indisputable Truth.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I most enjoy meeting and getting to know so many different people. Everyone has unique ideas, opinions, and beliefs and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE being challenged to think in defense of my beliefs just as much and as often as from the perspectives of other people.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Throughout my time here at UMBC, I've learned lifelong lessons, met lifelong friends, made lifelong commitments...all that good stuff.
But what always comes to the forefront of my mind in trying to sum up my experience at UMBC is a specific version of a quote that President Hrabowski is notorious for repeating at annual convocations:

Archives Month - our favorite month!
"Student Voices in Print: A Selection of Student Publications from the UMBC University Archives" showcases five student publications including The Retriever Weekly, Voices, Bartleby, Dialogue, and The Red Brick. The exhibit includes selections from the University Archives -
photographs, archival documents, and highlights from the publications are featured. Reproductions of the first issue of each publication are available at the exhibit cases for visitors to browse.
The exhibit will be up through November in the Library Rotunda (by the elevators on the first floor).

On-Campus Interviews offer students a chance to conveniently interview for professional positions on campus. Employers travel to our campus for the specific purpose of interviewing preselected students for currently open positions. Library Printing, iMacs Unavailable Thursday, October 4
New printers being installed
Printing in the Library will be unavailable on Thursday, October 4 as we install new printers on the first floor. These new printers will handle both color AND black-and-white printing. The printers will also be configured to allow copying, and scanning to a flash drive.
Current UMBC students, faculty, and staff will still be able to print from the Retriever Learning Center on Thursday.
In addition, the iMacs will be offline as they are networked to the new printers.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

UMBC Problems & UMBC Solutions
This tweet from UMBC student Caitlin Bozman caught my eye last week:
I really like what she's done here: pairing what she sees as a UMBC problem with a solution to that problem. That's a public service. It feels a lot less futile, and more responsible, than just venting frustration. Caitlin might find that she has more company in the Dunkin Donuts line, but she probably made some people's days a little brighter.
I'll bet other UMBC people have found some great solutions to other problems (or challenges, or inconveniences) too. So why not share them? Let's crowdsource this; we're all problem-solvers. What do you do that makes UMBC work a little better for you?
